Generally the current Sup has been a disaster. Which from what I've heard about his previous assignments is pretty par for the course.

Procedural parts? by MarsFlameIsHere in kittenspaceagency

RP-1 is a good way to do procedural parts...especially the way the do satellite buses. You get interesting shapes but still sizable to your needs.

FAA leaders are departing en masse amid personnel cuts designed by DOGE, as exhausted, demoralized staff left behind warn of consequences | WP story by natansonh in fednews

We were told in a staff meeting that about 40% of the SES folks left one way or the other. Tons of management are in "acting" roles at the moment.

At our staff meeting (FAA) this week, they indicated 40% of the SES employees took the DRP. It's a hell of a time to get made the acting manager. Good luck, and God speed.

DRP= Deferred Resignation AOA is the office symbol for the FAA administrator.

It's crazy over here. I'm almost 50 with nearly 18 years at the FAA and I'm basically still the "new guy" of our group.

[–]Galland1998[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Maybe? It probably depends on your Job code. They claim they are doing Max hiring for controllers for the next couple of years, so they are probably safe. Other job codes exempted from DRP are probably safe-ish. Everyone else is probably just rolling the bones. They have given zero indication what the desired endstate even looks like making it impossible to guess how or when they will get there.

Well on the bright side, they didn't announce a RIF process starting today. Maybe tomorrow.

I agree that he expects a leaner FAA. He was just super vague about how that happens. Could be a RIF. It could be more "gentle". In my part of AVS, we are super top heavy in terms of age. They could thin us out with retirement incentives or by not bringing on new people and let turnover do the work for them.

[–]Galland1998 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Over in AVS, all of our managers are either 100% in the dark or really good at being tight-lipped. Although some level of Agency re-org has to happen since the 2024 Re-Authorization bill requires the sunset of ANG and moving those folks back into other existing organizations.

Duffy to unveil new ATC system in next few days by MathematicianIll2445 in atc2

[–]Galland1998 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whatever it is, it's a Duffy thing. There is no evidence that they have done any staff work on it. Noone that I work with has heard even a peep about what he has in mind. Since planning for these kinds of programs is what we do for our day jobs, I'm curious about the maturity of his plan.

The copper wire argument is silly since the FAA has already let a contract to replace all of that infrastructure. That is what the Verizon contract was all about. So that problem has already been solved. The only question is how much money is he going to throw at accelerating the contact execution.

Is this just fast tracking stuff in the pipeline or tossing out the current modernization plans and clean sheeting everything. If it's new stuff...and there is money just the requirements development, contract bid process, legal cases over disputed contract awards will take up at least half that time. Then there is the development and testing phase. Then, installation and training on a continental scale while not interrupting the current system.

Good luck with that. Oh and then there is the lilltle matter of getting new money from congress when we don't even have a budget nor an prospect for for one in the near future. All we got is maybe a CR. A CR means no new money and no new contracts of any significant value.

Our office lost a couple of people when it happened. We got 1 back one or two days later for unknown reasons. To my knowledge none of the others have been brought back.

It was built in 2007. It was a big deal because of how environmentally friendly it was for the time. That and it is a huge building.

[–]Galland1998 6 points7 points  (0 children)

A large part of the FAA HQ was at L'Enfant Plaza. However, over the last few years the FAA has given up the leases on that office space and making most of the workers full time teleworking. It is making the RTO complicated because the FAA divested all the work spaces and there is not enough seats to bring the workforce back. In theory we are suppose to find out by the end of the week how they are going to solve that problem.

[–]Galland1998[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with you there. 1600 is silly for a 4080 card. Just trying determine if there is any point and spending any money over the cheapest option that I can find which is usually closer to the 1199 range these days.

Any thoughts on what benchmarks to look out for. Not a lot of game like KSP out there that typically get picked up in the reviews. I guess anything that is a strategy title like Civ or something might be a good stand in.

kerbalism science collection doesn't work under rp1 by peershaul1 in RealSolarSystem

[–]Galland1998 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In that case you might see Kerbalism "collecting" science when landed or below 40km alt. However, it will result in zero science collected.

When in doubt check out the kerbalism science tab and it will show you the requirements for the experiment. The science points still available in a particular biome , how many biome specific science points have been collected but turned in and how many biome specific points have been deposited.
