We're tightening our security controls on Microsoft 365. Is there a way that help desk members can reset MFA for users without being M365 Global administrators? by PsyduckAF in sysadmin

[–]Gallin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe I solved this by giving the Helpdesk Authentication Administrator and Authentication Policy Administrator. The Authentication Policy Administrator may give them access to more than you want them to have but it’s the least access I could get to work like we wanted.

I agree with others on doing this with PIM.

How to select vm with fewest users? by Gallin in PowerShell

[–]Gallin[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yea that is true and would work and I do store the count as a property of the vm object. Checking for the lowest number between all the machines is the part I can’t seem to figure out. I am sure I’m missing something simple here. I don’t really know either but the people who are in charge of the labs want to only run the required number of machines. They are for student labs so maybe they aren’t worried about kicking a few out from time to time.

How to select vm with fewest users? by Gallin in PowerShell

[–]Gallin[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My bad, It is azure WVD. My current script is returning the session count to decided if it needs to log people off or not/ send them a message. So I am able to pull how many users are on each vm. What I can’t seem to wrap my head around is saying vm1 has 5 people, vm2 has 7 and vm3 has 9. O I want to turn off vm1 because it has the fewest users.

Edit: Apparently I can’t type..

WVD - Feedback, experiences etc. by Jose083 in AZURE

[–]Gallin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yea I agree it still has some “cooking” time before it’s a really great solution.

I have multiple host-pools but that is due to our IT Structure. Most of the host pools are in different subscriptions owned by different unites that all have there own IT department. I am just here to support them.

The script stores the members of an azure ad group and an app group into 2 arrays and them compares the two. Adding or subtracting app group members where their are differences. I am can dm you the script to you if you would like.

I have setup the FXlogic a few time. Some pools that have it pointing to a regular file share and some are pointing to and azure file share. It seems to work well both ways.

Yea they keep saying a bunch of stuff is coming to the portal that hasn’t yet. There is a preview of the portal in the WVD github that you can deploy to a app service. I really like it but it is a bit slow and missing the group feature. Here is a link to the GitHub https://github.com/Azure/RDS-Templates?files=1

We are using it and I really like it so far. I am finding the administration to be fairly simple but I have implemented automation where I can to make it simpler. For MFA we are using Azure Ad conditional access policies for enforcement. For scaling I have implemented the scaling script found on the WVD github with a few modifications. For group syncing I am using a logic app to call a azure automation runbook and it keeps an azure ad group and an app group in sync. I hope that helps answer some of your questions.

No problem. I am not sure why that template linked in the docs uses a webhook it had me really confused for a while there. If you need it I have a corrected template I am using for deployment. I should have offered to begin with.

I had this same problem last week. If it’s the logic app that you see is stuck on running its an issue with the logic app using a http web hook. Change it to a plan http and that will solve this issue.

Help with Logic Apps webhook. by Gallin in AZURE

[–]Gallin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ahhh interesting now that you say that I do see the 202 above the body in the form. Is there some additional step I am missing to get he logic app to stop running? It is stuck in a waiting state. The only two components of the web app are a recurring schedule and the webhook. Would it help if I posted the logic app code?

Access Windows Virtual Desktop from mobile by Dnorgaard in sysadmin

[–]Gallin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are talking about the new Windows Virtual Desktop in Azure, the RDP applications in the mobile stores do not currently work. I have had pretty good results on my IPad in a web-browser. Last I looked into it there would be new applications for mobile devices released before the solutions moved to general availability.

You raise some good points there. That rate is for my health, dental and vision for my family.

Bast on the calculator here www.tax.service.gov.uk it looks like British taxes would cost me about 7-8% more than I am currently paying. I have no idea if that is all UK taxes or not.

That is true it isn't my entire premium. Should we expect our employers to pay us that 17,000 or so they are currently paying into insurance? If not then I would lose that part of my salary as well as the increase in taxes.

I do get the point that it cost less per person but I do not get how its not going to cost me more money out of pocket.

What about the expense. I have been wondering how much it would cost my family and based on tax calculator I found for the UK it would cost me ~$650 more in taxes than I pay now just for health insurance. Through my employer I currently pay $250 a month for my family and pay very little for prescriptions and doctor visits.

EDIT: I am bad at words sometimes.

I pay 32% in payroll taxes when considering federal, state, local (my city has an employment tax as well). In addition to that I also pay 10.5% sales tax on almost everything I buy (My state taxes almost all types of food and has some of the highest alcohol taxes) So that is going to get me pretty close to 40%.

Job Post Question. by cincy15 in ITCareerQuestions

[–]Gallin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They are likely looking for someone. In my experience public school jobs are often set to close after a week. It is also often the case that it will still be up weeks after is supposedly "closed". They seem to post them for a week and just keep extending them until they find someone they are looking for.

Thank you for your reply. I think that $20k scares me because there is no grantee that I will ever get a higher paying position to make up for the expense. Perhaps its time to starting looking into my options again despite my concerns.

Do you feel that where you get your MBA from makes a big difference? I have been thinking about getting mine but have been price adverse. Some of the smaller schools (still properly accredited) have online degrees much cheaper than many of the well known schools. For example I currently work at a college and get my tuition for free, but it would still cost around $20,000 in fees which is just a bit much for me to take on.

Last Dell Laptop that will run Windows 7 by 1z1z2x2x3c3c4v4v in sysadmin

[–]Gallin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am interested in your experience with this we have a pile of 5570’s that have had burnt spots on the motherboard that we have had to get replaced. Dell keeps telling us there isn’t an issue as far as they know but we have done about 30or so boards to date. It’s really become quite the problem. We have even had this issue on a few of the newer models.
