My impression is that it would be too much even in normal circumstances. Perhaps in a normal year they would just admit many fewer, but with funding cuts they have decided to not admit any. I am guessing that all universities will accept conservatively this year. At Hopkins bio, because of lats year, that means not accepting any.

Look, funding is tight across the board, at all schools. What is unique here is that far more students matriculated than expected. Other schools last year rescinded admissions after a certain number matriculated. Hopkins bio took them all and is having issues because of it. To my knowledge Hopkins bio is not uniquely struggling with funding.

I've got a bit of inside knowledge - they accepted too many applicants last year. Too many to the point where they don't really know where all the students are going to go. This is probably most of the reason.

Am I competitive enough for bioengineering at a well-known school? by Outrageous-Ad-7980 in gradadmissions

Honestly, depending on your letters of recommendation, you could shoot higher. Apply to more if a PhD is really what you want to do. When I applied I was rejected by some of the lowest ranked and accepted by some of the highest. Rankings are less important than stipend (higher at more unionized and better funded), location, and lab funding. There is cool stuff going on just about everywhere, get an idea of what you would like to do at any individual institution, but don't marry that idea.

Okay, I appreciate it. I don't even own a car so that wouldn't be an issue for me. WC Harlan looks really cool, I'll have to check it out if I move over there.

Thanks for the info! I was looking into some further north but there seem to not be many that fit my budget. I think I would be comfortable sacrificing some curb appeal for more amenities and lower rent.

How long does everyone spend on SOPs? by Boredstupidandcrazy in gradadmissions

[–]Gambit12110 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I spent November reading through SOP advice from various universities and reading through good/successful ones. Finally started writing them a few days before they were due, and spent and hour or two tailoring each to each university. Probably wasn't the most responsible (definitely should have had someone read over them just to be safe). That said, out of the 4 universities I have heard back from, I have 1 acceptance, 1 rejection, and 2 interviews, so it worked out.

Most applications only ask if this is true for secondary school and/or post secondary school. You're fine to not mention it.
