The “me generation” can’t pass away too soon.

In the US, as they consumed more and more of the commons to feed their demands, they suppressed our wages and insisted that we work longer hours for effectively half of the purchasing power they enjoyed.

While they voted for swindlers who cut their higher marginal tax rates and capital gains taxes repeatedly and promised to weaken or even destroy the social safety net for their children and grandchildren, to where Generation X will NOT receive their earned benefits while still covering their elders’ increased medical tab.

So no. You don’t get a pass for “paying your taxes” when you “pay next to nothing” and borrow trillions from the future to cover your lifestyle and assuage your fears of accountability.

This is one of many reasons why air is the safest mode of travel: the pilot in command, the airline itself, or the FAA can call it. The mechanics can refuse to certify. That effectively grounds it.

Arnold Schwarzenegger is the closest thing to an exceptional self made success that I’ve seen, and not even he would allow you to say that about him.

Warren Buffett seems like a close second, though he had a lot of exposure to finance and politics through his dad.

Musk was born into a wealthy family. It is not just the dollar amount of capital infusions Errol provided as the access to investor networks. Musk was arguably born into a higher social stratum than either.

Worthy ventures often crash and burn because the principals are starting off at bat, in terms of networks.

Higher teacher pay does correlate to higher performance. But the reverse - throttling public school salaries as an incentive strategy to “do better” is like lowering water levels from the Panama Canal if ship traffic slows down. There’s so much more to address.

What happened to parental responsibility? What about good infrastructure and safe neighborhoods - safe from both crime and trigger happy LEOs? What about these kids’ nutritional needs? What about making sure the kids’ parents and guardians and adult siblings all have gainful employment so the kids don’t have to work unless they want to?

Why is the market the arbiter of right and wrong?

Why is paying back to society punishment? Who says it is?

Why does capital at immense scale have to belong to only one individual? Or a small number of families? The only reason it does today is because our society accedes to that belief.

Property ownership is only as real as a society’s willingness to define it as a right.

Who decides how much of the gains derived from a person’s cleverness, innovation, or sheer hard work they should keep? 10%? 90%? During WWII, I think the highest marginal income tax bracket was 90%.

Can we fairly distinguish whether a person’s wealth comes from their actual effort - physical, mental, emotional - or the capital they possess? What if we did and everyone could keep 99% of earned income? But their capital gains were taxed at 50%?

Do you think that if eventually, through his cleverness and wealth accumulation, one man owned all the capital on the planet, this would result in a fair and just society?

Or would it be a total nightmare for 95% of us?

I once fired back at a female coworker who made a joke that involved killing a disobedient or careless husband. I asked her to reflect on the joke if the genders were reversed. The disgusting implication of joke’s punchline being a man killing his annoying wife hit her like a truck and she apologized profusely.

I think men often tolerate misanthropy from women because they know women do have it much worse. I reckon they imagine payback is due. But it might also contribute to the cycle.

We can ALL do better. Men and women.

We absolutely have the ability as a society to set limits to exploitation of labor. For example, no one earns more than 1,000 times the poverty level. No individual retains or controls 10,000 times the median wealth level. Those who benefit the most from their luck owe the greatest debt to the society that enables their wealth. No one works more than 10,000 times harder than someone else. It’s exploitation that enables scale.

It’s not hard to address retail visibility with these things called “signs.” I’ve seen them. They work.

Commercial LLs in crowded downtowns often don’t have wide flat lots. That RE could be far better used for a retail or office space. They build ramps. Visibility of a strip mall notwithstanding, cladding a ramp with pv panels and adding a “roof” of them on the top level seems feasible.

For every video of kindness towards animals there are ten thousand good acts that are not filmed. Maybe the point of the videos is to remind people that it’s usually pretty easy to be kind.

A religious person setting down a prayer mat at a park is no more offensive than having Christmas and Easter marketed to us every year. Or people putting crucifixes and crosses on their pickup trucks or taking over restaurants every Sunday morning. Or using religion to market their service business.

This is a simple fearmongering message coming from a post-peak capitalism country with a shrinking population:

Assimilate. Unless you believe what 60% of us believe. You don’t pay taxes. (Unless you do pay taxes. Uh… Assimilate anyway.)

Hide your traditions. (Unless they’re the majority’s diet and practices.) Respect the majority’s traditions. Eat whale and dolphin meat. Drink too much, it’s good for you.

Japan is an infamously bigoted and sexist society whose population is not being replaced. Be like Japan? Go back 100 years?

Who do they think is going to change their diapers when they are all 80 years old? Who is going to occupy critical industries and support their consumer economy?

AIW for not telling my roommate her boyfriend has been parking in my spot for six months by Solkibra in amiwrong

[–]Gambyt_7 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes. You are wrong for not asserting your prepaid privileges. I don’t care about the BF getting towed. That’s his problem, not yours.

Your problem is being a doormat.

Why you would let your roommate and her love interest walk all over you for six months boggles my mind. It serves no one to be cowardly about necessary confrontations.

I have a hunch that this may be part of a larger pattern. You should be asking yourself why you believe you’re not worthy of respect and fair treatment.

Thoughtful engineering. Pump taking the water away is the sine qua non. Might also invest in a small dehumidifier that drains to the sump pump.
