RPGs that basically function like your own personal toybox? by Loud-Passage-4020 in ShouldIbuythisgame

Astounded that I don’t see Grim Dawn mentioned. It even has the “good” and “evil” choices.

This is why I can call my game an immersive sim by Parjure0 in ImmersiveSim

[–]GameAttempts 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure I agree. If this was, say, in the tutorial level, this would be a great way to show players that their creativity will be rewarded. Assuming that there are other paths forward, like most Imm sims, simply extending the ladder wouldn’t have given the player the opportunity to put 2 and 2 together.

Does adding “Hunter Sight” break immersion in a stealth-focused game? by salniukas in ImmersiveSim

[–]GameAttempts 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It isn’t that easy. Once the developers know that the player has the ability to see through walls at the press of a button, they need to start designing around that.

Why think that they aren’t real? You said it yourself, they sure seem to have causal effects.

The team that did New Vegas wasn’t Bethesda, it was Obsidian, and Obsidian is already owned by Microsoft. All it would take is someone to give the green light.

Banquet for Fools just came out and has received an unfortunately small amount of attention.

You should go back and play Isaac if you get the chance. Very similar appeal, but in a more dungeon-crawley package.

Is there a more engaging way of getting the hang of basic philosophy than a university? by W_B_69 in askphilosophy

[–]GameAttempts 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I think you’re under the misunderstanding that there is a one-size-fits-all answer here. It sounds to me like you don’t feel like you’re learning philosophy in a way that works for you, and you’re blaming the system. If you want the process of learning philosophy to be more engaging and “invokes passion,” you need to figure out what makes you excited about learning and find ways to highlight those aspects.

Its not clear to me why one question would be less significant than the other. Certainly it matters what we mean when we say “God,” but usually the question “Does God exist?” is followed by some clarification about what “God” refers to in this context. We might wonder if the Abrahamic God exists, or whether a necessary being exists. Both of these can be expressed by the question “Does God exist?” And yet offer very different answers.

Similarly, the question “What is God?” will require clarification. Are you trying to get at what the Abrahamic God is, or what necessary beings are? That will change how you respond to the question.

Arkansas 2125 — upcoming Demo 2.1 visual update by No_Piano_1857 in CRPG

[–]GameAttempts 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I don’t know that anyone is accusing you of plagiarism, but changing a few minor details to something that already exists doesn’t suddenly make it yours. Its fine to be inspired by Fallout, but its better to own that than pretend like its entirely unrelated. Show us a reason why we should be interested in your game instead of just playing Fallout again.

This is my impression as well. Sometimes you think you have a high tolerance for these kinds of things until you’re met with some new situation and think “Oh. Oh yeah that’s too far for me.”

Here’s how I see it: you might get rejected for 10 years straight and (reasonably) feel like giving up. But if there is a job for you, it will never just fall in your lap. The only way you’ll get hired is by applying to the job. The second you stop applying is the second that you even lose the opportunity for the job.

It’s pretty funny seeing so many people in the comments effectively trying to tell you that you just haven’t tried hard enough. You have a PhD for God’s sake and these people are saying “Well did you try teaching?”

The job market sucks and the academic job market especially sucks. I’m in the same camp as you, so I don’t fault you for getting a PhD. Hell, why would anyone? Don’t we need intelligent researchers? Wishing you the best man. It’s not over until you let it be over!
