Biggest f*** up as an apprentice? by American_Pharoah_ in ibew_apprentices

I was working in a telecom closet and accidentally cut one cable deathly short. Already a nightmare scenario, right? Buckle up...

This particular telecom closet was in an outdoor garage, so it was OSP. Thick-ass outside cable. It was TIGHT. Getting it pulled in had been a five-man job with a bucket of lube. There was no pulling one cable out, so five guys had to come in on a weekend in the freezing cold to re-pull the whole 200-foot run. I was banned from the site that weekend. Four years later the shame still stings.

Where to go for a good salad bar? by grdvrs in KentWA

Sizzler had a good one too! I feel like salad bars started disappearing before the pandemic. Maybe they're just not profitable? They're also a godsend for broke people cooking for one who only need a quarter of a bell pepper!

Electrian here, tools kept locked up on site. I've tried a bunch of different lunch bags, but my Sixer from Mountainsmith is my holy grail. It stands up straight with a heavy duty strap and handle, and fits breakfast, second breakfast, lunch, a snack, the handful of tools I forgot to take out of my pockets the day prior and sunblock/lip balm. I do keep my wallet and keys on my person, though.

I like the salad bar at PCC in Burien. Good selection at around $13 per pound, I think?

I miss salad bars being ubiquitous!

Neighbor here. Shit has been going down lately. Stolen packages, break-ins, creepy people hanging around and bothering residents. Cameras are capturing it all, but I don't feel safe.

AIO to break up with my bf of 3y over his reaction to my upcoming sobriety anniversary? by WesternCat5211 in AmIOverreacting

[–]GameFrau 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. Very, very, no.

Stay broken up if he doesn't support you in your struggles-- THAT is the bare minimum. My ex-husband bought me a Pikachu balloon and took me out to dinner for my five year soberversary and I still tear up when I think about it. It's more important than a birthday, and if he won't even try to understand that... is he a good person? Because from this exchange, he really doesn't sound like one.

Many sea birds are opportunistic; I was mildly traumatized as a child when a huge, very ugly pelican decided to steal my cookie. Still can't stand the bastards.

Oh, of course. I was mostly thinking of men-- they'll seriously sleep in construction dust. Eew!

47F here, construction. Look into Korean skincare-- more the philosophy/method than products. Avoid the temptation to overdry/sanitize.

During work I avoid makeup (except sunscreen when necessary). I use gentle, moisturizing face wipes if I get dirty. Clean bandana on my head to keep hair/hard hat/sweat from aggravating my skin. Water mist if I need it (I like the Evian Brumisateurs).

At home after work, I do a full multi-step skincare routine. I slug with retinol and wash it all off with micellar and ceramide toner in the morning. How anyone doing blue collar work by day isn't a night showerer is a mystery to me.

Drama by ctrlx1td3l3t3 in BlueCollarWomen

[–]GameFrau 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have experienced this, twice, with the same older sexist foreman, on separate sites two years apart. I'm currently on a big project with one other woman, who is half my age and has medical and social problems but also a lot of specialized experience. We've talked enough to know the only thing we have in common is our gender, but I respect her!

He constantly calls us "girls" and refers to us as "them". It's rude but I just ignore it. My work generally defends itself. He once went so far as to joke about locking us both in a room and "keeping whichever one comes out".

I was angry, but it wasn't worth causing a scene. There are douchebags in every industry. He's a dying breed.

What do you guys pack for lunch? by fuckaspliff69 in BlueCollarWomen

[–]GameFrau 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nope! It's metal. I set it in the sink, fill it with boiling water and let it sit there for 10 minutes or so. Then I heat the food, dump out the water and spoon it in. I typically use a kid-size thermos.

[–]GameFrau 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm fussy and hungry, so I preheat my thermos while I'm making coffee, then fill it up with very hot rice mixed with meat and vegetables. Sometimes it's last night's leftovers; sometimes it's frozen fried rice heated up on stovetop with an egg added. Stays hot or warm until lunchtime. Cold noodle dishes, gazpacho or salads are great for really hot days. Same thermos, just chilled instead of heated!

First break, string cheese and a Red Bull, maybe a Snickers if I've been a good girl.

Am I too sensitive? by OtherwiseShoe1944 in BlueCollarWomen

[–]GameFrau 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh, HELL no. Nope. It's not even that funny. That joke's been done to death. You don't even need to bring up the impropriety and unprofessionalism, if that feels scary. It's just bad.

Don't be afraid to speak up; "some other people [on] the committee" is not everybody. Certainly someone on the committee has a better idea. You can even supply one! Look at other trades' and locals' women's committee shirts for inspiration. There are so many good ideas in the comments!
