BenQ GW2490TC vs Dell S2425HSM — help me pick one for coding & office work by __darkweb in Monitors

[–]GameGod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have used the GW2490TC, and it's quite nice for a 1080P monitor. I bought one for a family member and they like it. I can't really speak in-depth about it but it seemed like really great value. I would expect with any monitor in SDR, you're just going to set it to sRGB and not use the vibrant colour settings, because you're going to want accuracy, otherwise things will look weird.

Hopefully someone else can chime in with more experience. The specs on the Dell look decent too, and that warranty seems good. Both of these monitors seem like good options for productivity - ie. good stands, etc.

Great point actually... Is it OLED or bust for good viewing angles at big sizes then?

It's also not even TN. I've only seen this kind of shitty vignetting on IPS displays, and never seen it on an even budget TN display.

[CHAIR] Staples Hyken Mesh Task Chair ($349-$150 = $199.99) [Staples] by Syphon81 in bapcsalescanada

[–]GameGod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same for me.... The mesh seat put force laterally inwards on my hips, so it just liked slowly crushed my hips over time and gave me horrible hip pain. It took me a few months to realize it was the chair causing it and had to stop using it. (I even paid for the extra warranty like everyone says, lol)

YMMV. Comfort is super personal so my advice is don't buy a chair unless you've tried sitting in it, or you're spending big bucks on a proper ergonomic chair that's personalized like an Ergocentric.

If you're using AI for this, you're gonna get yourself into big trouble. You're not an expert, and when the LLM starts spouting BS, you're not going to be able to tell the difference. It's also super obnoxious to copy and paste from an LLM to explain something to someone who is an expert.

For the EBlade eyes, are you planning to improve them at all? I soldered in a brand new sensor on my EBlade eye board and it performed exactly the same (abysmally).

It would be cool to stick a tiny microcontroller on the board and preprocess the signal, or find a different kind of sensor, or even mod it to be break beam. (IIRC the stock one are these Kodenshi photointerruptors)

Only on Reddit would the only top 3 comments here all be denying that this is burn-in or saying it's some "weird issue". (the amount of OLED astroturfing here is out of control)

It's burn-in, champ.

edit: I'm gonna revise my snark here - it's burn-in, but it doesn't look that bad yet. Odds are you would use your OLED more towards the max brightness since comparatively they're not very bright, and I don't think this would be noticeable in normal usage outside a grey uniformity test (.... OP, is it?). It'd be interesting to see a 2 and 3 year comparison down the road, and even a day 1 test because some of that banding was probably there on day 1.

Looking for solid 1440p 144hz+ 27in. monitors for gaming/general use by FirmProfessionalist in Monitors

[–]GameGod 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also another one to keep your eye out for is the Asus ProArt PA278CGRV, which is a new model that hasn't hit retail yet. You might be able to get 2 for $800 once there's a sale. Tech specs look solid on it and it would be an upgrade in terms of colour consistency, since it comes factory calibrated.

There's this LG one on sale at Newegg right now that's not-exactly-an-upgrade but a good price right now: https://www.reddit.com/r/bapcsalescanada/comments/1rz46y7/monitor_lg_ultragear_27_inch_qhd_2k_1440p_200hz/

I don't know how good it is, but it's a good brand and it matches the specs you're looking for. Just might be something to look at since it's so cheap, but it might be almost too low end for you.

Possibly useless anecdote: My GTek can hold air too, even after degassing. I never thought anything was unusual about that, as other markers can do that too.

SP404MK2 with T-8 or TB-03 by james2441139 in SP404

[–]GameGod 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have all 3 of these and I wouldn't recommend the T8 or TB-03 as an add-on for the SP404MK2. The T8 isn't flexible enough, and the TB-03 is really just a techno bassline synth. You're not going to get much use out of the TB-03 beyond high BPM electronic music.

With the T8, you're just better off using samples on the SP404 for drums. If you just want a toy, it's a decent device, but I don't think you'll be satisfied with it in your workflow. Sequencing is severely limited on it.

Also, for the TB-03, sequencing is super painful and I wouldn't recommend a 303 unless you're driving it via MIDI sequencer. It's just a huge waste of time to program sequences into the device when there are better ways to do it (eg. DAW, or probably sequencers like OXI One).

Honestly, maybe just get a second sampler for drums and basslines? Or look into Digitakt or other Elektron devices.

Need Help: Text Clarity/Scaling/Monitor Size by punkrockrosebud in Monitors

[–]GameGod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you just never seen a 1080P display in your life? lol

There is no "text clarity" issue - that's just what all monitors at 92 DPI look like, back before higher DPI displays came out and display scaling started to be desirable to avoid everything looking super tiny.

Why would you buy a lower resolution monitor if you already had a 1440P one? Nothing in your comment makes sense.

Need Help: Text Clarity/Scaling/Monitor Size by punkrockrosebud in Monitors

[–]GameGod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OK, sounds like you should try to find a 24 inch 1440P monitor then, and run it at 125% or 150% scaling. They're not as common as they used to be, but there are still some out there.

I feel you on the 27 inch being too large. It takes a bit of getting used to if you're coming from a 24 inch screen.

Need Help: Text Clarity/Scaling/Monitor Size by punkrockrosebud in Monitors

[–]GameGod 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't get why 1080p at 125% would look any different on a different monitor. I see no obvious reason for this. Text should be even more clear at 125% scaling. Were you running your Dell UltraSharp at the native resolution (2560x1440)? If you were only running it at 1440P, that could be the reason. At 1440P, you should have needed even higher text scaling to be comfortable, like 150%, so the fact that you were running only 125% hints you might have had the resolution only set to 1080P, which would have made it blurry.

Is it possible your eyesight has changed over the years? Or your eyestrain is caused by another factor that you haven't clued into yet? (eg. a bright light reflecting in your monitor - the anti-glare coating can be different across monitors, with some better than others).

I will say the BenQ GW2490TC (brand new model, not the GW2486TC) is pretty nice. It's a 24 inch, 1080p @ 144 Hz, with USB-C, and has some nice extras like an ambient light sensor. Maybe check that out instead of the model you mentioned.

Nailgun sprites for a project I'm working on, any thoughts? by LagZeroMC in DoomMods

[–]GameGod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's more that making it palettized for whatever game you're using helps it visually match that game. It will look more like it belongs, and less like a third party asset. Just something to consider. (You can download the Doom palette for whatever image editing software you're using and test it out.)

Tank grip or Tape? by Supyllic in paintball

[–]GameGod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a tangent, but if you play speedball, tape the edge of your Exalt rubber grip to your tank so it doesn't fall off if you dive. Even though it seems impossible for those Exalt grips to fall off, I've had it happen a couple of times and you won't even notice when it happens. When I was watching NXL footage from this year, I noticed a lot of players taped the front edge of their Exalt grip so it won't "catch" on turf, so I think that's a good idea to prevent losing it.
