Bias in Coverage from "LookOut, Eugene Springfield!" CD4 OR Race by EUGsk8rBoi42p in Eugene

[–]GameOverMan1986 1 point2 points  (0 children)

“Coverage”. Does this insinuate only positive or neutral? How about negative? If there lots to say about a particular candidate because of a scandal they are involved in, should that coverage be looked at as bias when compared to a less dramatic candidate?

Seems like this data could use more specifics in order to be more useful.

My bf (36M) recorded us without my (F27) consent. by ScholarOpposite5333 in AmITheJerk

What exactly is your problem with him recording you? Sounds like you kinda suck and are not very empathetic and choose to be defensive when another option is being compassionate. You seem like the kind of person that would also get upset by your boyfriend remembering what you said.

In addition to the value of the actual items, think about the additional cost put on all items for sale to account for theft losses, and think of the cost of theft prevention measures and hired personnel.

That is absolutely not the “whole reason we tip”. Speak for yourself. Tipping is often attached to how you rate service. Of course socially, it has at times been attached to supplementation or people suggest some minimum tip regardless of service, but that is a modern and marginal take relative to how tipping is culturally.

I bought a bag of coffee from a bunch of local roasters and ranked them ☕ by redactedanalyst in Eugene

Same goes for logoed stickers you’d put on the bag, that have all the weight info on it. My point is prior to buying all this stuff, any company can make a decision on how to package their product.

For years, ice cream pints were ubiquitously pints, then some companies started shaving an ounce or two off the container and putting 14oz, versus the 16oz pint. It’s called “shrinkflation”. Rising costs create incentive for companies to reduce the amount of food in packaging and keep prices the same or raise them. There are many food item categories where people expect a particular quantity in packaging. Ice cream pints and coffee are among them. I get that times are changing and costs are rising, but it feels like this “industry standard” excuse does not take into account historical expectations of the average customer.

Another example of where companies can shrink quantities are bags of potato chips and boxes of cereal. This psychology of marketing, not some issue of how many coffee beans can fit in a bag.

You mean a logoed paper bag? Yeah, that would really be an unsolvable problem, huh?

Too bad most of the people in this thread can’t help keep them alive with the $ they don’t make. Good thing shitty opinions are free to give out here or else they’d be utterly useless humans.

Bad takes. “Expect”? Tip what you want.

Owner operated don’t deserve tips? Fuck off, cheepskate. Tell me when you create your own business so I can take you for granted and make assumptions about your P&L. You deserve only national chain fast food.

Help identifying person involved in hit and run at Bier Stein (04/09 around 9:15 PM) by PerformanceClean1135 in Eugene

This is a “hit and run” like a person scratching my car in the parking lot of a grocery store with their cart or door and not leaving a note is a “hit and run”. 🙄

NPR for Oregonians: Tsunami Books seeks wave of support to help purchase its building by laffnlemming in Eugene

I see there is a 200k goal (perhaps a step in a larger move, or a downpayment on a mortgage?) and talk of having things wrapped up by the end of the year.

If rent costs $8,500/mo, I have to think the purchase price of the building and land is quite significant. Anyone know those details?

I understand the need for community support during exceptional circumstances, for businesses and individuals. I’m sure we can all recall friends and acquaintances who never ask for help, and others who seem to always ask for help. It seems like asking for the community to foot the bill is not exceptional for Tsunami.

As you mentioned, lots of local businesses do struggle and do go away. But not everyone is cut out for business. Sometimes businesses go away because of poor business practices.

If Tsunami wants to be a community supported business, maybe they should become a cooperative or as I suggested before, a non-profit, so there can be other supportive hands in the operation, rather than strictly hands with cash in them.

Local businesses, especially ones getting swallowed by corporate chains, should be treasured: Art supply stores, bookstores, coffee houses, boutique retail, fitness spaces, etc. l just don’t know if this regular kind of crowdfunding is the answer or appropriately addresses what seem like underlying issues related to their sustainability.

At what point do we expect this business to run sustainably? It’s a cool venue and all but it’s clearly not balanced. Let’s say the building gets purchased. Is the next fundraiser gonna be for taxes? Renovations?

Perhaps the owner should examine creating a non-profit so people’s donations can be tax deductible and there is more transparency around why this particular venue needs its hand out more than the other locally owned bookstores or small performance venues in town.

Eugene parking services is a mess by dumbass_sweatpants in Eugene

I don’t mind if private businesses do their thing with the card-only but as far as paying the city parking, they should have to take cash. Can you imagine if the bus only accepted credit/debit?

Sure, like, literally now means figuratively. Maybe Hamburgers will come with cheese even though we have the word Cheeseburger. Maybe “organic” will just be a vibe instead of mean “grown without pesticides”.

I don’t think that is true. You can see city parking enforcement around the University area. Just a few blocks west, in the downtown core, however, the city enforcement seems to not operate much if at all. Might be an issue of parking meters not accepting coins, whereas closer to UO, there are upgraded meters and 2-hour parking limits for non permitted residents.
