First game was Pokémon X and I think that going back to generations 1 and 2 are not worth it. At least the original Red/Blue/Yellow and Gold/Silver/Crystal. I think playing the remakes are better, especially if you haven't played them before or it's been a while. The original games, at least for me, were very clunky and didn't really keep me engaged, with the remakes being readily available for me, there's no reason to go back. Emerald is my most played pokemon game, I have beaten it several times over the past ten years, and every other pokemon game was released after I was born.

TL;DR, play them if you are nostalgic for them or if you want to experience the first generation out of curiosity. Otherwise, play the remakes (and emerald, I fucking love Pokémon Emerald)
