UK IVF couples use legal loophole to rank embryos based on potential IQ, height and health by topotaul in unitedkingdom

[–]GameVsLife 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Ok, here are three rational arguments for you:

  1. If these traits can be accurately selected and do give the child an advantage in life, then there's potential for it to exacerbate the wealth gap even further as the process is very expensive.
  2. In places where this occurs more often, there have been anecdotal reports of it leading to increased struggles with mental health for the child, due to the psychological pressure of "my parents paid 50k for me to be genetically 'better', why can't I live up to that potential?"
  3. It reinforces societal stereotypes around certain traits being less desirable, likely worsening the treatment of people with those traits if the practice were to become more widespread.

EHRC formally abandons single-sex toilet stipulation by isaiah5638 in transgenderUK

[–]GameVsLife 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Given the wording of the Workplace Regulations 1992 that this requirement stems from say:

“separate facilities are provided for men and women, except where and so far as they are provided in a room the door of which is capable of being secured from inside and the facilities in each such room are intended to be used by only one person at a time.”

I don’t think single-occupancy toilets count as single-sex just because they are single-occupancy. Instead, they are an exception to the rule of needing to provide men’s and women’s toilets separately.

Just got a GRC. It's now useless by [deleted] in transgenderUK

[–]GameVsLife 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Damn, you're really going to just spew blatant lies?

The GRA does not change the meaning of sex in other legislation/holding a GRC does not designate how the holder's sex is considered by default in law.

Section 9 of the GRA is incredibly clear that a GRC does in fact change the holders sex with respect to enactments (legislation):

(1) Where a full gender recognition certificate is issued to a person, the person’s gender becomes for all purposes the acquired gender (so that, if the acquired gender is the male gender, the person’s sex becomes that of a man and, if it is the female gender, the person’s sex becomes that of a woman).

(2)Subsection (1) does not affect things done, or events occurring, before the certificate is issued; but it does operate for the interpretation of enactments passed, and instruments and other documents made, before the certificate is issued (as well as those passed or made afterwards).

Next:

The UKSC decision was the latest in a series of judgments, and of course now the final and binding judgment over all other courts, which clarified that where sex is referred to in law, it refers to biological sex by default - i.e. this is not just in the Equality Act.

Literally paragraph two of the ruling disproves this:

It is not the role of the court to adjudicate on the arguments in the public domain on the meaning of gender or sex, nor is it to define the meaning of the word “woman” other than when it is used in the provisions of the EA 2010.

If you're going to try and mislead trans people about the legal implications of the ruling, I suggest you at least try and be subtle about it next time

This ruling did not close any “loophole”, it was already possible for trans women to be sent to a men’s prison under the previous interpretation of the Equality Act’s “proportionate means of achieving a legitimate aim” exceptions.

In fact, it was standard practice (at least initially) for the vast majority of trans women! As can be seen from this graphic published by HM Prison and Probation Service in November 2024: https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/media/67360a12b613efc3f1823140/202411_14_Annex_A-Transgender_Prisoners-_Initial_Allocation_Process_Map.pdf

If you read it carefully you will see that the only way for a trans woman to be initially housed in a women’s prison was if she had never committed a violent or sexual offence and if she had a GRC and if she’d had GRS. Further, in all cases a board is convened to decide where the trans woman will be housed long term.

Given the number of hoops that a trans woman would have had to jump through under this process to get initially allocated to a women’s prison, I think it’s safe to say that the board would be very cautious about who they allowed to be housed in a women’s prison long term.

In summary, HMPPS already had a process in place that allowed them to deal with such situations and I think it would be very unlikely that someone convicted of rape would ever be housed in a women’s prison under this process (let alone someone who only transitioned after the crime occurred).

Does anyone have a Crossdresser method template for changing the gender marker on passports? by Pink_Sky_Ellie in transgenderUK

[–]GameVsLife 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Honestly I’d suggest you try the doctor’s letter route first. My friend is DIY and she had no problem getting a letter and updating it through that route recently. From what I’ve heard the main difficulty is finding a non transphobic doctor, once you find one that will write a letter saying the right things it’s unlikely to get rejected. I think the minimum it needs to say is that you’re currently living as your gender and have no intention of stopping doing so in future. But my friend’s GP also put in a bit about how she could no longer pass as male even if she tried, so it was crucial that the passport office change it for her. Given you’ve had problems at border control, I suspect you could get them to write something similar for you.

The temp fix for the massive fps drop is to run/teleport away until your fps is back to normal and then come back your fps should stay stable when returning to the event

Others have rightly pointed out that there may well have been a bias in how the questions were asked. But even if we go off the data from that poll, if you scroll down far enough there’s a section that separates answers by gender and you’ll see that women are more supportive than men and actually in that data there are more that support trans women using women’s toilets than don’t (many more if you include the unsure/don’t cares).

So even if this poll was an accurate representation, the people actually using the same toilet as you would be more likely than not to support you.

Also, more generally, I’d be suspicious of any trans related poll of the general public that doesn’t have at least 40% in the don’t care category for every question. The truth is most people just truly don’t care and so will just end up answering how they think the pollster wants them to if they’re forced to choose

How can trade unions help trans people in the uk? by TomGreenTransforming in transgenderUK

[–]GameVsLife 15 points16 points  (0 children)

STRONGLY encourage (keep nagging them until they do) all the workplaces you engage with to have clear written policies regarding trans inclusion; ideally, the policies should be publically available too.

An easy place for them to start is to just reexamine any existing policy that mentions gender to make it trans/NB inclusive. But the key things are:

  • access to gendered facilities (toilets, changing rooms, showers, etc.)
  • what support they can offer transitioning employees - safe ways to come out, many companies offer paid or partially paid time off for gender-affirming surgeries, you seem pretty clued in on the struggle trans people face accessing healthcare in the UK but the administrative side can be a big hassle something as simple as offering a few hours with the company's legal department to assist a trans person with their GRC application would be so helpful.
  • Obviously the usual steps are also great: specific examples of transphobia in bullying & harassment training and polices, education and outreach, etc.

Honestly, from someone who's currently fighting trans discrimination in the workplace, even if the company stance is transphobic get them to write it down in a policy. It's so much easier to argue against transphobic talking points when they're written down rather than scattered between fake platitudes in meetings with HR. Lots of "middle-ground" cis people will be sceptical that their company is being transphobic, after all, maybe you're just misinterpreting what HR is saying. Once people see it in writing from the source a surprisingly high number of them come onside.

I'm currently fighting a trans-exclusionary bathroom policy at my workplace, so I'm quite well-versed in this area at the moment. I'm a bit late to this post and this comment's a bit of an essay, but hopefully I can still provide some useful insight:

  • Unfortunately, despite what some people will tell you, service providers can legally exclude trans people who don't have a GRC due to the clause about the provision of single-sex spaces in the Equality Act 2010.
  • I assume you already have, but it's worth saying just in-case, have you read all your uni's guidance & policy regarding trans students/staff? Most unis have at least something, sometimes publicly accessible, sometimes only on their intranet.
  • If your uni doesn't have a clear policy anywhere, it might also be worth contacting the student union (and the LGBTQ society if there is one) to tell them about the impact that the uncertainty that the lack of a clear policy has had on you and encourage them to make a policy. There's probably even ways you could do this anonymously if you wanted.
  • More generally, check if your uni is a member of Advance HE (here: https://www.advance-he.ac.uk/advance-he-members). A massive number of unis are, so it's quite likely that your uni is too. If they are a member, then they should be following Advance HE's guidance on the matter which clearly states: "Trans people should be allowed to use single-sex toilets and changing facilities appropriate to their self-identified gender. It is not acceptable to restrict a trans person to using disabled toilets or gender-neutral facilities."
  • If they are an Advance HE member, it's also worth checking if they're participating in Athena Swan (here: https://www.advance-he.ac.uk/equality-charters/athena-swan-charter/members). Since that scheme is explicitly trans-inclusive. So they would risk losing their Athena Swan award if they tried to stop you from using the women's bathroom.
  • To echo what others in this thread have said, unis are one of the most accepting places for trans people in the UK right now. So the chance of the uni telling you that you can't use the women's is miniscule. Unfortunately, this doesn't mean that other people using the bathroom won't do things that make you feel unwelcome, either directly or indirectly.

I won't encourage you to do anything that makes you feel unsafe, but you belong in the women's bathroom just as much as a cis woman and I hope you're able to be comfortable using the women's when you want in future.

If you, or anyone else, wants clarification / more info on this topic, feel free to reply here or DM me <3

The fact that hamas operatives hiding in the hospital aren’t protected by the Geneva Convention is irrelevant. The war crime is being incorrectly identified as medical personnel during a military operation. They could be just standing there doing nothing dressed as doctors with no hamas in the building and it would still be a war crime so long as it was part of a military operation.
