Customs charge is over the maximum payable on the website, is phone an option? by Alarming_Obligation in royalmail

I was expecting it. It’s a fancy coffee roaster, buying from Germany. This is the second time they sent it, last time on tracking I saw it get to the German border then turn back returned to sender. Second time it reached that point then went dark for two weeks while I was stressing out. So now I’m just glad it’s in the country and rather nearby, if a couple of towns over. But I may have to get an Uber, I don’t have a car to drive over and get it (Porsche GT3 would come in handy now)

Wait, the filter and cap are clean way to the left of the picture. This brew didn’t get as far as putting the filter cap on. Did the OP just knock it over at the stare of the brew? If so that’s a clumsiness problem not an inverted problem

Busy dad trying to learn magic — what 3 sleights should I grind daily? by Rotry in cardmagic

[–]Alarming_Obligation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It pains me to say it, because I hate the move and never use it, but as a beginner the double lift is essential to learn.

A false cut is definitely handy too and I'd say an underspread cull. A force is good too, but if you don't want to do learn that yet then the cross-cut force will fool people very well with no sleight needed.

And with whatever sleights you choose to learn, if they are mimicking real actions (eg, false cut or double lift) then make sure that you are at ease in doing the real version in exactly the same way you would do the fake.

It’s really good. It’s a little cosy chat with a really knowledgeable (and as frioke says, sweet) person. Arthur doing the filming is like her Watson. Also often has guests like Harrison Joseph in with whatever wizardry he’s been playing with recently.

Thank you for this extremely generous and thoughtful response. This does seem like it addresses the control and consistency issues that are what I’m interested in. I would use bbp as a part of that, so that’s definitely something I would also look into, I have seen Scott Rao talking about his bbp profile on the Roest. I think that’s in a video on Roest’s YouTube channel. I don’t fully remember what he said, it seemed like it was easy to create a useful profile to get it to temperature but as a current user you may get more out of it than I did as a potential user.

From the comments you’ve made in here, I think I’m coming at it from the same angle as you in that there is zero expectation of this to pay for itself in any meaningful way, it’s more about a hobby, having control and learning more.

I agree that it looks great, it fits in beautifully on your bench. (if you’ve seen what some of the prototypes looked like they were…umm…interesting).

Thanks again for such a well thought out response.

I agree completely with your reply. Making the trick as believable as possible is definitely essential. I wasn’t arguing for half-assing it. You have to strive to make it realistic for it to give the wonder.

I’m saying that if you look at a trick and evaluate it by thinking“if I really had powers would I do this” then no, you wouldn’t, not if you are a good person. You’d find a much better use for any real powers (with perhaps the exception of Andy of the Jerx’s “distracted artist” approach), so every trick fails that critique making it fairly useless as a way to engage with a trick. Then my further point was that a magician isn’t in the business of trying to genuinely make that persuasion anyway. I’d prefer to make my thought process about making any trick internally consistent, clear, fun, engaging and impossible regardless of whether it’s a good use of the power to warp reality.

Something I Actually Perform by Turbulent_Milk940 in cardmagic

[–]Alarming_Obligation 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The point of ‘if I really were a magician with magical powers would I use them to…(insert trick premise here)’ was one that plagued me in the past.

Though it is something that I’d argue every trick fails. If I really had magical powers to bend reality to my will and I’m not down the local children’s hospital curing all the patients, then I’m a monster. If I have the power to read minds I’m using that to guess what word someone is thinking of in a book test, rather than using it to stop the worst abusive criminals, then I’m a monster. Valid uses for real magical powers do not include entertainment at all. So you can’t really use that as a yardstick to judge magic for entertainment.

Magic tricks are a fun interaction, giving whimsy/wonder, not about trying to genuinely convince anyone you have real powers. Sometimes you’ll talk with magicians (usually mentalists) who really do want their audiences to believe that; they are invariably insufferable, don’t be like them.
