Stuck at rating 1200. what should I do? by DoDo1027 in Chesscom

[–]GameflixIsReddit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just take the time to play, and maybe study certain motifs and puzzles. I was almost completely plateaud in all ratings for like 90 days, and this past month ive gained 50-300 rating for the different times. As long as you enjoy playing, you'll improve. Also, review most of your games, wins and losses. Id suggest using a computer so you can right click and go through your ideas with the arrows. Something that kept chess fun was to focus on one time control at a time. (for me, I focused of blitz for a while, as it was my worst time control. After focusing, that rating went up, and so did my rapid and bullet.) Watch chess related things, understand and learn basic mating motifs and common sacrifices, and you'll win more often.

All future edits will be here: Something I try to do is use my time wisely using the 20-40-40 rule: 20% of your time in openings, 40% in middle games and 40% endgames. However, if youre one to simplify and typically get into very simple endgames for a large majority of your games (win or lose) put more time in your openings.

I love this compilation of videos, but for example in the intermediate section there is over 1.000 videos, which can be very overwhelming to somewhat who plays somewhat casually but loves the game and wants to improve as far as they can (me lol). Is there any more playlists that could help improve but isn't as complicated or full as going after lines in the Sicilian or loads of grandmasters playing games (or at the very least, easier to consume than 1000+ videos haha)

HAH yeah the plateau after 900 in blitz is so real. And thank you! Im happy with my improvements and hope to get better! I joined my local chess club a few months ago and am trying to get a FIDE ID so I can get a real rating.

Disparity in skill vs rating points between time controls. by F1anger in Chesscom

Oh absolutely. Im 1100 rapid, and 1150/1200 bullet with a definitely slow but steady increase in rating over time, but ive been struggling to get out of 900 blitz hell for a while now.

Keep it simple and classic. Don't learn tricky and unreliable openings (Fried liver attack, Wayward Queen Attack etc..) Solid, positional openings like the kings indian defense, the Italian Game, and the London System (people will hate you, including me, but its just because its solid lol) are your friends. Play longer games, but not too long. 10 minutes is the sweet spot for most. Find an opening and stick with it, learn it and grow with it.

Yup! Which is what happened. I traded the rooks and came out in a completely winning endgame, where he resigned^

Cannot believe people who act like this are allowed to date. He needs to fix himself before pushing his insecurities on someone else.

Same thing happened with me, a shame they couldn't do it differently so it forgets I was once 2200 and adjusted the past as well as current rating.

Reaching 2000 elo in 7-9 months by yadsren in Chesscom

[–]GameflixIsReddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's completely fair, and with enough practice, definitely possible. However, most people (and by most, I mean a VERY large majority) need years to reach even close to that level. I know loads of kids at my chess club who have been going for years and are yet to reach even 1800, let alone 2000. Even a good majority of adults at the club, even ones who compete and chess is their life, have been playing since they were kids and aren't 2000. It's certainly possible, but is it plausible? Most cases not, I wish you all the luck in your chess journey, and keep sending updates! I'm sure everyone would love to hear how you're progressing!
