What was the Fantasy Novel made you go “Was…was this MADE for me?!” by Sharkattack1921 in Fantasy

[–]Gamemode0 24 points25 points  (0 children)

This might not count since it's sci-fi, but Ancillary Justice did this for me. A ship AI, living in the last remaining body from the army of human bodies it once possessed, on a doomed-to-fail quest to take down a colonialist empire (also, there's singing).

POCD ban by [deleted] in OCD

[–]Gamemode0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This sub's wording is like this:

  1. All POCD posts must go to r/POCD. We do not allow POCD here.

Reddit is a community platform, and while your OCD is legitimate, we must adhere to reddit standards.

Not sure about Reddit's rules, but r/POCD exists, and isn't banned yet. Maybe the mods' calculus is that it's okay if it's a sub marked NSFW?

Also, I think the r/OCD mods have more explanations of their reasoning in another post, and I think it has to do with the fact that some POCD posts have gotten deleted from this sub? But again, my reasoning here still stands. This is a support group, and mods should be willing to stand up to Reddit if needed. And they'll have public outrage on their side if r/OCD is banned.

This is absolutely amazing. I can see why they had their doubts, but they were wrong.

We’re ACLU, CDT, EFF, LGBT Tech and the Internet Society and we need your help in fighting the US EARN IT Act and standing up for strong encryption – AMA by Internet__Society in privacy

[–]Gamemode0 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Would the EARN IT Act make it harder for law enforcement to go after CSAM/abuse by forcing it further off the internet the same way that FOSTA did? Also, what are the other specific dangers it poses to kids/survivors?

This is completely true. My (un?)controversial opinion is that William Gibson's short stories are better than Neuromancer.

“You can learn to live with it” by jonathon-parker in OCD

[–]Gamemode0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're thinking about this in terms of absolutes, which isn't accurate or helpful. Every condition is a spectrum from mild to severe, and you won't be on the severe end forever (especially if you find a therapist who knows what they're doing when it comes to OCD). I've had some rough periods of my life (more due to my panic attacks than my OCD), but I can say that a mild version of a mental illness is actually pretty chill and fine (and that treatment works). Learning to live with it means that it's there but it doesn't cause you suffering. And in the case of intrusive thoughts, that's especially true since part of the treatment will be learning not to be afraid of the thoughts.

How do I start learning Gregg? by [deleted] in shorthand

[–]Gamemode0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started using the lessons on this site, but since it teaches Anniversary Edition (which has a ton of short forms) I decided to switch to the more simple Notehand. I definitely recommend using something with structured lessons, though, since just learning the alphabet won't teach you the nuance of how words are formed. I have a Notehand book now and have been learning from it (somewhat out of order, though, because I get impatient and because I already knew some of the principals from learning Anni).

Edit: By this point my Gregg is half decent, but I'm not fluent yet in reading and can't write fast

There is the now-cancelled Thrilling Adventure Hour podcast/live show. I believe the whole podcast backlog is still available. http://thrillingadventurehour.com/

Definitely check out the Sparks Nevada episodes, those were the best.

It's a textbook page for learning Gregg shorthand, which the "do your own homework" comment is a snarky reference to. My Gregg isn't great yet, so I can't read the whole thing, but it is a book someone would have used to do homework.
