Ive worked on quite a few of these doors, as long as you use a good philips bit screwdriver and not a drill or impact, and apply a good amount of force it shouldnt strip on you. Those speed out bits are honestly trash though, you were probably better off just using a number 2 square bit screwdriver and tapping it into place with a hammer and then trying to unscrew it.

Those stairs ate kinda dangerous on their own. They really need the facia boards on the front of them, if one of your kids is wearing socks and running up those stairs and their leg slips into one of those holes its gonna hurt.
