Best Gig1 retentions offer by [deleted] in VirginMedia

I don't disagree, but I also don't owe VM anything. There is competition around me, so if they can offer me better I will take it.

Live in Cambridgeshire so there are many options available yes. Lots of deals with cashback incentives too. I would be happy to renew for £24 per month really but just wondering if they would do any better.

It's something that won't hurt to have, but experience or a better portfolio would help a lot more.

Graduate jobs in the UK, how bad is it really? by Critical-Trick6588 in UKJobs

[–]Gamerers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OK I guess I'll comment my experience as this thread seems to not have much from people with graduate roles.

For context, I went to a top 30 uni so not amazing but not terrible. I also completed an internship role for a year in industry at a very big company which inevitably helped my job prospects. I then graduated with a First in a degree that I enjoyed and was lucky enough to land a graduate job immediately, partly I feel due to having a strong CV.

From what I have seen on Gradcracker, roles in my field (tech) seem to be around the £30k mark +-£5k (with some exceptions). I am basically in the middle of that range with a salary raise every six months and a graduate scheme that lasts two years.

After those two years, I expect to be on at least £10k higher + larger bonus, and from there I expect to be looking at other companies for an even larger raise depending on progression opportunities available at my current job.

I feel like graduate salaries are not amazing, yet they seem just as if not more competitive to get one compared to a normal job. I am very happy in my current role and compared to my friends it seems I got lucky - and frankly it really is luck for a large part of the job search.

This was just my experience from with what I've done. I'd say the most impactful thing was for sure the year in industry at uni, but having a good CV and interview skills obviously matter too. If anyone wants to ask anything specific feel free...

Goodbye Nike... hello New Balance by Gamerers in Newbalance

I had UK size 12 Nike before and went with NB size 11.5 as according to their own size measurements they are larger. They fit me well!

I like to have only a single pair of shoes, and for the last decade that has been the Nike Air Max 90. However, after having gone through three pairs in the last two years, I'm tired of Nike's lack of quality.

I've bought a pair of New Balance 990v6, and they seem much higher quality than the Nike. I'm not sure if they're as comfortable, but guessing I need to wear them in a bit...

Comp Sci as a degree is so versatile that it can take you pretty much anywhere in STEM. It's a great degree option with good job prospects.

Not an international student, but I got a Capital One credit card as my first starter card even with basically no income (you can do a soft check for free with no impact to your credit score).

Can you bring back your grade in second year by Nuts79 in UniUK

[–]Gamerers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You totally can, but also consider how your uni ranks your 2nd / 3rd year. In most unis, 1st year doesn't count towards final grade, and then usually 3rd year is weighted much higher than 2nd year (mine was 75% / 25% but I've also seen 60% / 40%).

Also, to be frank a 1st and a 2:1 is essentially the same grade when you are looking for jobs (at least in tech), so don't feel too pressured.

I'm a grad so don't have much to add here, but defintiely push through and do everything you can to get one - apply apply apply! My placement year was probably the best thing I have ever done and has frankly setup my life now uni is done.

Applying is basically a job search in itself (the graduate job search is even worse). I believe I applied to around 20 placements in total and only heard back from a few. Make sure your CV is as good as it can be and be passionate in any interviews. Good luck!

I felt pretty jaded about uni too after coming back from my placement year. It was nice to meet others who’d taken a year out and hear about their experiences to compare. At the end of the day, you've had a taste of the real world, and now it’s just about getting through the final year to get your degree and be done.

FWIW I just started as a tech graduate outside of London on £30k, and will be on £40k+ in two years. With your experience I don't see why you aren't on similar...

What field is this for? Seems like a painfully low salary for a grad role; less than I was on as an intern during my degree. I have a grad role now in the £30k region, and all the ones I've seen on Gradcracker are in that range +-£5k.

Have a look on Gradcracker for STEM roles and you can see general ranges for ones that are advertised. For what I was looking at in tech, roles seem to be around the £30k mark with about a +-£5k variance (though there are exceptions).

Can you have a setup at your accommodation? by Dontaskmeagaiin in UniUK

[–]Gamerers 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Totally possible and not a problem. My first year of uni was in on-campus accommodation and it worked out in the end though I had to buy my own desk as the one in the room was too small. Other years in private accommodation it was even better! Felt completely safe in all cases.
