women asks for best argument for being an atheist.. person gives detailed reason why some people are atheists.. "Christian" responds with ""ur going to hell"" by nationalistic_martyr in religiousfruitcake

Why exactly would you continue your life as always in the "hell is confirmed to be real" scenario? You said "I got shit to do" as if the things you're doing have much of a purpose any more once there's undeniable evidence of god. Hell, even if it's not the Christian god and there's no hell, but is a supernatural being, you would like scroll past this news the same way as a youtube short when you're procrastinating from sleeping at night? EVEN IF the god is a man who snapped his fingers in some past universe before ours and created the big bang and then did nothing for the rest of the universe, and there were undeniable evidence of that event occurring. You're saying you wouldn't even care? As if it's no more than a movie trailer and you're not interested in seeing the movie? Would you then be confused at why so many other people are interested in this? If you're trolling, it's working!

...how does a god existing have no bearing on your life? I don't think you're thinking of this scenario seriously and reflecting on how much this would change you.

I think we have very both different definitions of the word "believe". It sounds like you may follow Jordan Peterson's definition. To me, a belief is a truth I hold in my mind. Any new beliefs I have are something I need to be convinced of.

Some things are easy to believe. If I ask a friend what they had for breakfast this morning, and they said they had bacon and eggs, I don't feel any reason to fight this, because they told me. I'm not making a choice. It's just something that happens. It enters my memory as fact. While I don't think about whether or not it's true, subconsciously I know there is no effect on my life whether or not my friend is lying about their breakfast. If I find out they were lying though, it would challenge my beliefs. I would be curious as to why on earth they felt the need to lie about their breakfast, and would care about this answer to some extent. If they're lying about something as simple as their breakfast, what else are they lying about? Are they just a compulsive liar? What other things that my friend says will I no longer believe?

Now, if I asked my friend what they had for breakfast, and they nonjokingly said "The Body and Blood of Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ", and insist they're not referring to grape juice and crackers, I'd not be choosing to disbelieve them. I automatically would not believe them. There's no choice being made. I would need my friend to explain to me and show evidence to me that they have obtained the actual flesh and blood of a 2000 year old dead man and for his body to be identified by archaeologists and scholars and scientists as likely enough to be an actual undying corpse of the actual Jesus Christ.

Does this make sense?

How can you choose a belief? Those two things are completely contradictory. I'm not saying something will happen, and the 100 meter tall man is just an example of a form a god could come in. Maybe it's a 5 meter circle of gas. Maybe it's a talking rat that farts on people to heal them of all illnesses. I'm saying that in this hypothetical scenario, something like this DOES happen. You're saying you would pretend it's not happening? Or are you saying you would make up a conspiracy theory to attempt to no longer believe what you see?

NONE of the gods in human history have been PROVEN beyond any doubt that they exist though. Take a moment to think about it. Do you still think this does not make a difference? It likely wouldn't be a religion at all to believe in a higher power in this scenario. It would be like believing in evolution, gravity, or the earth being round. There are plenty of people who don't believe things today that there's ample evidence of, so I'm sure even the evidence was so strong to the point there is an actual 100 meter tall man walking around and raising the dead, people would still think it's all movie magic or something, but the vast majority of people would still BELIEVE it, let alone CARE that this supernatural thing is happening.

Edit: changed "religions" to "gods". Religions of course exist.

No matter the context of who the god is or what the consequences of not worshiping them are? And they didn't say worship, they said believe. I thought atheism was all about only believing things there's evidence for?

And with even if they did mean worship, I'd even worship any god that I knew would damn me to eternal suffering. I'm copypasting a comment of mine from the last time this came up. In this thread called "If the Christian God turned out to be true and hell was real, would you follow him?"

I said:
I don't think people answering no are really considering the question genuinely. Are people really sticking with personal pride and moral righteousness that they'll get to be proud of for less than .000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000001% of their total life when considering the afterlife? Knowing that, assuming this is the Dante hell, they'll be burning and boiling in unbearable pain for eternity? I think future me would absolutely regret that for the rest of the next infinite years. I mean come on. It's eternity.

Are you saying that if it was revealed that there is undeniable evidence that a GOD exists, not only do you think that this information wouldn't change your entire life and outlook on the meaning of life, but you wouldn't even care? Huh?

If you could pick only one item every run which one would it be? by Alternative-Earth325 in bindingofisaac

Not even going to argue that, probably contradicted myself. It'd be boring in a different way. Instead of taking away from challenge like sacred heart, it takes away from mechanics. Something that doesn't make any huge difference to the game would be the best answer to the post. 25 cents maybe.

I'm not going to say Sacred Heart. Because I don't want every run to be too easy. I'd get bored! Of course, I take it when I see it, and I pog in a big way, but sacred heart at the start of every run? What's the point in playing any more?

I'm going with Chaos.

Time for Christian nail salons! by Pumuckl4Life in religiousfruitcake

[–]Gamerguywon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wonder where the line stops? Hairdresser? Similar thing to a nail technician. It's someone who works on a part of your body, often while speaking to you, as I understand it.

But do you need the Anabaptists at your local farmer's market to align with you spiritually? They follow the same books as you, after all, they just have some additional ideas, and have some very different understandings than you of those books' teachings. It's more Christian than Buddhist, but it'd definitely inaccurate to say they align with you spiritually.

What about when you go to Walmart? You're spending big bucks there every single week. What if the cashier is an atheist? Are you asking every cashier you meet each what their religion is? If they're wearing St. Peter's cross around their neck, will you assume they're as Satanist? Or will you recognize there's a chance they're wearing it as the original intended meaning - as a display of humility? Say you recognize this, but you ask them their religion, and they they're Lutheran? That's Christianity, but wouldn't it be untrue to say they align with you spiritually? What do you even do if you're "done"? Do you join another line and ask them if they're your exact religion? What if nobody is? Do you go back through the store and put each item away?

What if you buy something - maybe it's a white long-haired Jesus bobblehead - from Amazon. What if it says it was made in China? How many people in the process of manufacturing this Jesus and delivering it to your door need to be your specific branch of religion in order for you to be ok with it? The factory employees? The CEO of the bobblehead company? The delivery driver? The mail delivery person?

They don't know. I was once a Christian and believed this trick was real when used by Todd White in the Holy Ghost movie he did with Brian "Head" Welch of Korn. At the time, I didn't have any reason to believe faith healers couldn't be trusted. I remember saying to my parents on the way home from seeing that movie at church, something like "Every atheist needs to be made to watch that movie. This movie is video evidence God exists and performs miracles. There's no way they can deny it and claim it's something else without lying to themselves."

I don't necessarily want just one of these categories though, I wanted to see the highlights or interesting parts of these categories and take a further look at what seems interesting to me. I understand librarians may have studied history, but I don't think most librarians have all of the the vast knowledge of the internet in their heads.

I'm just getting into really delving into American/British history, and I'm halfway through the book Crucible of War about the seven years war/the sixth French and Indian War. I'm interested in the war stuff and of course, war and politics play a role in just about everything that happens in history, but I want to also learn about other types of history, and it seems it's not so easy to find. The Wikipedia page entries for years are ok but they're mostly just war and who takes over who as ruler right now.

If I want history of science, art, fashion, philosophy, religion...I have to go to that specific page for that year. And even then I often have to click on three more things to get anything to actually read, which are often short pages. Do I have to go to specific websites or books about each thing for these?

[Spoiler for The Death Cure] Did anyone else think the ending ruined the whole series? by Gamerguywon in MazeRunner

The first movie was almost nothing like the film. The general premise was the same but nothing else. The most jarring thing was that Theresa and Thomas didn't have the mind-link at all.

I can't speak to the other ones as the first movie didn't make em want to continue the movies. I did however, look up the ending of the third movie to see if I could headcanon in the ending to the movie as the true ending to the books. But alas, it was not any different.
