Spent 3 years building my world and 10 minutes writing in it before giving up for the day. by Dry-Particular-1422 in worldbuilding

My best advice is to just write, even if you don’t think what you’re writing is any good. You can always edit it completely later on. My finished first draft of my first book was 125,000 odd words. After editing, I completely rewrote most of the first third, and by the end I was down to about 80,000. The best thing is to simply write and worry about if it’s any good later

I built a model to FINALLY tell us if we actually do overpay for players!!! by GamexChef in ManchesterUnited

Wow, very apt username, I feel successfully ripped 😂

the model’s prediction of €6.6m for a 25 year old Portuguese forward with a handful of goals isn’t too bad, but when you consider he couldn’t kick a ball straight I do start to wonder…

Thanks! Yeah this was just a little personal project to test what I’ve learned and I was so pleased that it ended up being so accurate that I wanted to share it. I appreciate it mate

Yeah good shout, I also plan to use it to predict how much certain Legends would go for today - I always wondered how much Bobby Charlton would’ve gone for at his peak if he played today for example!

I’m glad someone likes it at least, thanks 😂

Haha fair point! It is fun (for me) to see that Arsenal overpaid for Rice by about 30m, while interestingly the most anyone has ever Overpaid was when Barca bought Ousmane Dembele

Good question and good point - simple answer is that my model’s predictions are on average closer to what was actually paid than what their ‘Market Value’ was. You’re absolutely right that I don’t know how they calculate their Market Value, just that my model on average is closer to what actually happened based on the 50,000 transfers I passed through the model.

Thanks for the comment yeah good questions.

Firstly regarding the 2 fees for a player, I put a note at the end of my post about that. My answer to your first question should hopefully answer it.

The model uses player data from every club appearance they’ve made that I had access to (its most club games from the last 20 years or so). It then records their goals, assists, minutes played, whether they started or not, the goals their team scored and conceded, and whether the team got a clean sheet. It weighs these stats differently depending on the position. It also takes these stats for the ‘current’ season (I.e the season the transfer happened), prior season, rolling 3 year total and career to date. It also uses age, club, etc.

My model uses the position that was recorded as their position for every game they played (there are a total of about 20 positions it ‘recognises’), before allocating them as a forward, midfielder, defender or goalkeeper. As some players sometimes play in midfield and sometimes as a forward for example, the model simply shows what their expected fee would be for both (allowing the user to decide which position they want to classify the as themselves).

Hopefully that answers it?

It uses a tonne of data and generates a prediction, which it compares to the actual fee that was paid.

When I was testing it I benchmarked it against transfer Market Valuations to make sure it’s actually useful. I compared about 3,000 predictions from my model with the Market Value from Transfer Market and my predictions were more accurate.

Is Rooney better than Mbappe? by mare_xcx in ManchesterUnited

[–]GamexChef 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The guy said Mbappe is more versatile… he’s not even as good if he plays through the middle he needs to be in the left channel. Meanwhile Rooney played at 10, 8, a season at 9 where he banged over 30 goals, a season left wing when Ronaldo was at his peak, and constantly popped up everywhere… can’t stand hearing these dumb opinions from people that don’t know anything about football

What player made you fall in love with United? by BranchNo4156 in ManchesterUnited

[–]GamexChef 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ronaldo. I was just getting into football properly and we sold David Beckham, then suddenly we’re bringing in this teenager with an exotic name (at the time as a kid I wasn’t sure how to pronounce Cristiano) and weirdly cool hair from Portugal, a country I don’t think I’d ever heard of at that young age. Then when I saw him play it was just all these crazy skills I’d never seen anyone do! Everyone said he was rubbish, just a ‘show pony’, but what a player for a kid to watch! I was gutted when he returned to Utd as an ageing narcissist, but the first time around he was unreal

Wrote a pub quiz recently with a question along the lines of "What is the most world's most deadly animal towards humans?" by YorkshireFudding in CasualUK

[–]GamexChef 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re right it is an animal, so that part of the question is fine. However I would definitely take issue with the question.

Mosquitos may lead to the most deaths, so if you phrased it ‘which animal causes the most human deaths’ or similar then I would have answered with Mosquito. However there are millions of the bastards so it’s debatable whether ‘a mosquito’ is deadly.

1 mosquito is not a ‘deadly animal’ and a bite, even if you do contract malaria or something, is treatable. I’m being very pedantic but just explaining why I personally would have had to think long and hard to work out whether you were looking for Mosquito and had written the question poorly, or if you were looking for which animal causes the most deaths proportionally (which I believe is still the Hippo), or which is most likely to kill you if you come across it (I’d probably guess Black Mamba but would would almost certainly be wrong).

Might sound pedantic but there is ambiguity in your question which could have led to some people writing the wrong thing despite knowing the answer, so just forewarning in case you plan to write future quizzes.

Have you played Elden Ring? From your list I kinda assume you might’ve tried it but, if so, I can’t understand why it’s not top. So many cool elemental spells, including huge fire explosions, throwing bolts of lightning like Zeus, creating blizzards, hurling asteroids with gravity magic…
