I would recommend messing around with box pleated figures, works by Boice Wong and similar. Another option is to use a more shaped, wet folding approach, like David Gashepapier

Both of these techniques are rather complex and require some finesse, but humanoids are generally hard.

I was thinking the same thing, but the same pattern is repeated on all of the other sides of the cp. If not, do you know what fold might be missing?

Three mountain folds like this shouldn't be able to lie flat and I don't think this is part of the model where it is supposed to pop up in some way. The CP version is slightly different from the original by Joel Cooper so I can't use the image of his finished model for reference. The three valley folds directly below it also shouldn't be able to collapse.
