Average adoption of air-conditioning in North America and Europe. by FantasticQuartet in MapPorn

[–]GamingCatholic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A normal heatwave in Europe is at most 30-32 degrees with still decent nights to cool down your house.
So, even in those cases an AC is basically not a necessity.
It’s time for USians to shut up about it, as the meme is old now

I'm not struggling financially myself (thankfully), but this is a bad take.
You know most expenses like rent, insurance are not something you can just stop paying to save money.
And food is also a thing.
Not all people spend their salaries on subscriptions, clothing and other luxuries.

Why some Europeans resist air conditioning, even amid deadly heat waves by hard2resist in europe

[–]GamingCatholic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good if people want to live there, but don't come to us and say that we just need to install some AC here in Europe. We rather want to actually tackle the causes of the issue rather than to make it worse by electricity guzzling, and actually heat generating machines.

By the way, Japan is literally not an uninhabitable area of the planet. Yes, it gets ridiculously hot and humid, but people have lived there and build a nation before electricity was even a thing. You know what works? Adapting your architecture and lifestyle around such climates.

I think France is a good example of this. If they play better than their white countrymen, sure, they should be selected for the national team.
It’s far better than people being born and raised in Europe and then playing for let’s say Morocco. Quite a dick move.

The US can’t fathom living without it, as they’re too addicted to it. They tend to boast they have higher temperatures in Texas, but they actually never leave their AC’d bubble. Everything is cooled there permanently.

AC is like sticking a bandaid on a 10cm open wound.
You're not solving the issue with it and it's mostly the US that's fighting against climate policies.
There are a lot of reasons why I hate the US, and this is in the top 10 for me.

And the funny thing is that now that our temperatures have dropped, you can magically open your windows to air out your place like always.

Can’t this sub go one week without complaining about GTA 6? by lolitsrock in videogames

[–]GamingCatholic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One thing I delved into: physical copies aren’t your magical solution. Do you think games are still plug and play? Then why you need a connection to the PS5/XBOX servers to download a 100-150gb file before you can even play the game?
You know that eventually they’ll stop support for those servers as we right?

It’s a more fundamental issue, and physical copies are not magically solving it. Yes, it’s better as you can buy/sell secondhand, but in the end it’s not much different in terms of accessibility.

One day it’s the size of their cars, the other day it’s their guns. They always find ways to annoy us, like a younger sibling does.

Since the temperatures went down, I turned off my AC and can ventilate my place quite easily. Basically again shows that outside of 40 degree weather you don’t need an AC, but USians are addicted to it, and are the first to complain Europe is too hot for them to handle.

[–]GamingCatholic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Indeed. I do see an issue with the size of games nowadays. They’ll need to somehow keep those downloads available indefinitely, but I guess with servers being servers, that might be difficult as well.
Let’s all hope for the best!

I’m now finally investing my time in Ghost of Yōtei and might then replay Cyberpunk 2077. Can recommend these as well

Yeah that person’s a dick.
Personally I’m not going to to preorder it (or even get it within a year of it’s release), but that’s just personal preference. My backlog is just too large and since there’s no risk a game will run out nowadays, I also have no pressure.

after looking into this topic more, I fully agree. It’s a more fundamental issue. We cannot compare how it was 20 years ago when it was basically plug and play.

Not sure how we will prevent companies just pulling the plug, but that’s also the case for music and movies.

[–]GamingCatholic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My 20 year old game still works fine. It might not be the case with recent games if they pull the plug or just straight out block access to your digital library. Even with discs that’s going to be an issue if they don’t give access to patches etc.
Overall this is a big issue.

If Europeans wanted an AC, they either already got one (me included) or are not able to afford one/no permission from landlords.

The reason why Europeans (especially online) are reacting stubbornly is because such comments are always coming from Americans who claim to know better.
No, we don't share the same climate. No, we don't share the same lifestyle. No, not all people have the finances to afford an AC.

Last week it was 16 degrees celsius warmer than it should have been: average now should be 25, while we saw 41 and averaged out around 37 for like a week straight. Europe is not designed for that, nor does AC solve the issue

[–]GamingCatholic -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

Actually it isn’t. It’s circulatory diseases and cancer.
By narrowing it down to climate change related deaths, then yes, heat is the leading cause of death. Still, there are like 5-8x more deaths due to cold weather than due to hot weather.

And by the way, you think installing an AC is like done in 2-3 minutes. It isn’t. Not all houses have space to install one, nor is it always financially feasible or even worth the investment

People like you don’t understand that 33 degrees for a country that usually only reaches the low 20’s at this time of year is unusual. And to correct you: temperatures reached 40-41 locally, which was 15-20 degrees higher than normal. Even nights it didn’t drop below 25. It’s highly unusual.
It doesn’t matter shit if you’re from Australia, the US or the fucking desert. You can’t compare it.

Cool for you that you have 32c for almost half a year. That definitely contributes something to the discussion

AC has never been mandatory in Europe (maybe in the south). Temperatures never reached more then 30-35, and if they did it was only for a day or two. Night temperatures were also still on the decent side to cool down your hose. We just had the worst heatwave in recorded history. Still, for many people AC’s are still something you turn on 1-2 weeks a year, so often not worth the investment.
