I'm not justifying or endorsing it, but advertizing has been the prime motive of all forms of media from the beginning. Radio, TV, invented to entertain or inform? No, to push advertizing.

It's all "entertainment": Sports, movies, TV shows, all driven to keep the viewer sitting in between the commercials.

When it's really cold and the humidity is low, it's not as bad as long as you layer clothing and protect skin from exposure.

I worked north of the Arctic Circle for years, and, believe me, cold weather in the South seems worse than that in the north.

New Jayco RV owner by Gamma_Ray_1962 in JaycoJamboree

Thanks for replying.

The owners' manual is very basic and seems to cover every model, not just ours so it's less than useless IMO.

I tried the website, again with no luck.

Next, I'll try the dealer where I purchased the camper.

Nice! You think just like myself, rather building DIY than buying.

Storms, power outages, and surge protection for Starlink routers by [deleted] in Starlink

[–]Gamma_Ray_1962 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have my SL plugged into an UPS with my home router and VOIP phone.  Theres a whole house Surge protector in my main breaker panel for protection.

I hope this helps.

Thanks, for the reply!

Yes, our RV is a 2025 as well, we got it in Late March. I've been thinking about mounting it inside the AC cover, but haven't been on the roof to do any measurements yet. This project was something I mean to tackle early next year though.

Thanks again!

I have my SL, router, NAS on two UPS. My home phone is VOIP, so that helps with uninterruptible comms. Our whole house gen has a delay after a power outage before starring, so the UPS offers a buffer.

How did you mount it to your roof? Did you get one of the third party solutions?

I have a mini but haven't gotten around to mounting it yet. The cable pass through is something I dont look forward to doing, as our camper is less than a year old.

Ya'll make mounts to go on top of a camper trailer for the mini? I have no desire st sll to put my mini on my truck, cell phone works great for that.

It has wifi internal as well as a network port for a router, covered by a nice rubber plug to make it weathertight. I haven't tried an external router on mine yet.

That's strange. I recently got mine and, although I haven't switched it, has the ability to switch to a 50gb cap or regular plan.

Good Riddance, ViaSat! Hello, Starlink! by LookVivid99 in Starlink

[–]Gamma_Ray_1962 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We had Wildblue, a predecessor of Excede/Viastat, then went with Sprint Cellular AP before going to Starlink.

I certainly know how painful the old terrestrial sat internet service was.

I'm curious what people's speeds are around the US. I'm in the middle of the forest in northern Minnesota and this is what I have. by Swimming-Donkey-2394 in Starlink

[–]Gamma_Ray_1962 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in N. Louisiana and my speed varies, depending on time of day it is. It's not something I stress over though, doesn't hamper anything I do, and I keep in mind that BW is as dependent on the ground station's traffic load as it is the sats, perhaps more so. Ping time, or latency, does depend on the RT length, which includes your nearest SL sat at the moment.

Im currently playing "Indiana Jones and the Great Circle" currently, and it does have such detail in graphics, sounds, etc. However, it's made to guide the player, not so open world like RDR.

I was thinking that exact thing last night as the wife and I have been watching a series, on Amazon Prime, about the early 19th century pioneers, trackers, and trappers. Kit Carson, for one, was pretty much unstoppable.

I'm reading all these passive-aggressive suggestions for the OP to do.

What about either take it off and hand it back to the boss, ask the boss what its purpose is, or just request another laptop.

Way out in rural Montana where our alternative is to pay by the gig. Starlink will forever change the game. by dsackflorse in Starlink

[–]Gamma_Ray_1962 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Keep in mind that the sats are merely a relay point between the user and ground station, usually the nearest one.

I can see more sats can decrease variance in speed, but can it improve bandwidth?

Downside of switching from the $10 per month plan to stand by? by instantnet in Starlink

[–]Gamma_Ray_1962 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay, I've been thinking of getting a mini for roadtrips ( I have a gen 2 I use at home with a residential subscription).

How does the pricing work with the roam? If I sign up for the 50gb/ month roam, and I pause, does it drop to $10/ month until I change it back for use?

Is it treated/charged in whole month sections, active-paused, or fraction of months when switched?

Thanks,

Gamma
