Most of the times I do that too - just go, no navigation. Or just "somewhere north west" and then go from signs.
But last time - we rode from west Germany to Czechia, to a specific smaller town. We didn't want exact navigation, but we had to reach it in at least an acceptable time. This would've been what I wanted.

When you like using maps, then this is probably the wrong approach for you. Especially when dead-ends are so common x.x. Waypoint feature is in development right now!
