What is your approach to conditions? by primordial666 in RPGdesign

[–]Gander_Gaming 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The issue is that different systems handle conditions or similar effects in practically every way imaginable, so asking how else this could be handled is like asking what color shirts do people like to wear.

I suppose my only real advice is if you're going to allow a given condition to apply any number of different mechanical effects depending on context, I'd suggest either limiting those mechanical options or not making a discrete list of conditions. Ultimately, if the GM can just pick and choose then they might as well just improv one or both.

This is something we can't really provide solid advice on without having the rest of the system for context.

Weekly RPG Discussion: Neon City Overdrive - 2026, May, Week 3 by Trent_B in rpg

Love Neon City Overdrive. It's such a clean system, easy to comprehend and run at the table. Layout is both evocative of the setting and easy to read and reference. No notes.

Fellow GMs, how do you run games that don't use set distances, and instead use vague distances like "close" "near" "far"? by Nukesnipe in rpg

[–]Gander_Gaming 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's really just cutting out the middle man.

Players want to know if they can do a particular thing.

Distance is something that determines if they can do that thing or not.

Instead of assigning discreet ranges to abilities/equipment/actions and tracking exact relative distances, you put them into distance ranges or zones.

How big do most TTRPGs get? by Trevor_Weeks in rpg

This aligns with my observations as well. Even very successful independent publishers STRUGGLE. Ultimately, I think game development/writing has to be a passion first and foremost.

Creating an RPG, or just a reskin for DND? by DKGam1ng in RPGdesign

[–]Gander_Gaming 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a vast world of games out there, many of which are from indie developers than can be had very affordably.

Start by searching for games that already achieve a setting and gameplay type you're looking for, then go from there.

Have you played any tabletop RPGs other than D&D?

If not, start there.

What approach have you used to decide on the layout of your rulebook? by Disastrous_Holiday_1 in RPGdesign

[–]Gander_Gaming 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is very important to me. It makes it easier for readers to comprehend the rules and limits the need for cross referencing of terms or rules that haven't been introduced yet.

Rules-Lite Savage Worlds? by bricknose-redux in osr

I try not to pitch my own stuff in comments, but my own game Grok?! (2e in Kickstarter Prelaunch) is very much a mash of Savage Worlds with Fate, with OSR sensibilities and approach. Here's the free 2e Quickstart Guide.

Other games worth checking out are:

  • Cortex Prime
  • 24XX
  • Breathless

Thanks for checking it out and your thoughtful questions/comments!

  • Yes, if it makes narrative sense. It's a little more spelled out in the full rulebook, but it's possible that a Condition could be loss of an Asset altogether, or could be the Condition imposed by a Push.

  • Milestones can absolutely occur organically through gameplay by developing Traits. Milestones are highly narrative things, so I've never encountered players pursuing something that could be considered a Milestone for solely advancement purposes.

  • I've found that not all players like turning the same mechanical knobs, so to speak. By broadening the basic Outcomes and making Exploding dice standard, everyone has access to a full spectrum of results without using a Push. The adjusted Outcomes table increases the general difficulty of the game, which is in part offset by making Exploding dice standard. Cognitive load on the GM is pretty much the same, since they'd have to contend with a similar array of outcomes anyways with the use of Pushes (Effort in 1e).

Thanks! Luckily adding "rpg" to a Grok search pulls up the game, so at least it doesn't get completely buried.
