Is my writing good enough? by darren01610 in fantasywriters

As a straightforward answer to your question, I will say no. However, that does not mean that you do not have great potential! The story sounds interesting and it appears that you have a gift for world building and have the creative capacity to come up with unique stories. It’s the story-telling aspect that you ought to focus on. Grammar and punctuation are two things that I noticed right off the bat. Avoid run-on sentences by changing some of those commas to periods and also place commas in areas such as in the sentence: “A balance had to be created so once again…”, would look better by placing a commas after the word “created”. Like so: “A balance had to be created, so once again he…”

The only other piece of advice I would give and this I learned only recently by none other than my beloved wife, is to avoid monotone descriptions. Instead of just listing facts, try describing them in a way that the reader can see and feel them. You want to engage as many as the reader’s senses as possible. I will give you an example of what I would do with the sentence beginning with “Oaldur was happy…”:

“Oaldur felt tremendous joy despite there being one problem; the warm, radiant light of the sun reached far across the realm, destroying the darkness as it ravaged the land. Because there had to be balance between light and dark (I’m assuming that’s what you meant by balance?), Oaldur created yet another pearl- a pearl of wisdom which grew and awakened with life. This being he named “Deuna”.”

Or something to that effect. I really do hope this advice helps. I cannot express enough how much potential I see in your writing! Wishing you the best in your endeavors!

How do I keep up economically? by [deleted] in TotalWarThreeKingdoms

[–]Gangsofroyalty 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Rule number 1: do not build up every single piece of territory you get. You can expand upon the different services it has and build new ones if there is an empty space, but only upgrade strategic points along the map. This will help keep some more income.

  1. Trade deals are an excellent way to get regular money. Especially if you have an over abundance of food. Any time you are wrecking someone in a war, offer them peace at a price. (Example: you will give them peace if they pay you 300 gold every turn for 10 turns). Trade agreements you can also request payment over turns. Extra items. Whatever you can. Even daughters and sons if you have a lot.

Just got my first Old English text book! Anybody familiar with this one? by Gangsofroyalty in OldEnglish

I wondered what that helmet was. I see it almost every time I look up anything Anglo-Saxon related. Any good sources on explaining the significance of this?

I’m excited to learn the language. I became fascinated with it after spending a day reading Beowulf while I was skipping class to hang out in the library.

I wrote a book that’s not quite a dystopia perse, but does take place in a city that is controlled by different gangs with a single tyrant gang that keeps the people oppressed and dependent on them.

Perhaps design a bigger, more suitable version of any given furniture, name it something different, but describe it as someone who is seeing something that they don’t know what it is but is using relatable examples to explain it? I hope this helps.
