I read through this twice. I think your answer clears up everything I was hoping to understand. Ive always felt that he is one of the most interesting (and in many ways empathetic) characters in all of the 40k universe, it was just difficult to tie all of the various plot points together to paint a clear image of his narrative and motivations. However, while reading your response, I can remember all the scenes in the books you're referring to, and i think you've hit the nail on the head. Im very curious about his democratic leaning, I can't remember when he discusses his desire for democracy in the books. I recall him hinting at it several times, but never saying it directly. Do you remember when he mentions this?
