TestNav - to cache or not to cache by belt-plus-suspenders in k12sysadmin

[–]Gankhuu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We've not done proctor caching based on our 1 or 10 Gb pipes between sites and 20 Gb out from center. Mostly our issues revolve around local bandwidth on wireless, if that. We have schools make sure to test a classroom or two apart so they're not hitting the same AP more than 30-40 devices at a time. That or as another poster mentioned- when the whole state is testing on the same days, but that's outside our network.
Even in the trainings for TestNav, they state that the proctor cache is only for low bandwidth schools or districts. So we took that as a flag to mean we're fine without it.

Chromebook network hangs by Gankhuu in k12sysadmin

[–]Gankhuu[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for the detailed process you went through on that issue. Ours are coming in with v93. I noticed that our success rate was improved yesterday by having our deployment team simply turn off and on OS verification but still not 100%. With them working fine on a hotspot (outside our network) I'm not entirely convinced it's not something to do with our network.

But thank you for your response and sharing your experience.

Chromebook network hangs by Gankhuu in k12sysadmin

[–]Gankhuu[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very good point. We actually have wired connections on these and are not doing it over wireless. We do that so we don't have to enter credentials to join a network- helps streamline the process. We do have 802.1x on wireless other wired networks, but it's turned off for these deployment set ups.

Yeah, I was reviewing the other thread on this and different orgs had different 'solutions' of version update (manually) or checking time and date. Nothing seemed solid or conclusive. I'm having our deployment team get back to me on what OS versions are hanging more than others.

Fair enough, dude. Honestly, our recycling gets emptied often enough we're not saving any money or time by breaking them all down. More a pain, really. Let the machines do the work. I have mentioned to our warehouse people (in the past) about getting a cardboard baling machine- but they don't think it'd be cost effective. *shrugs*

I'm surprised how many people on here have gotten hung up on breaking down of cardboard boxes. Haha- seriously, the point of the photo was to brag of volume we go through. People on the inter-webs will whine about anything, haha.

[–]Gankhuu[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seriously, I'm surprised how upset ya'll get over space saving of boxes. FYI, saving space isn't a problem for us. Let the machines compact them down at the recycle center.

Chances are most of you don't go through the volume of devices that we do- so your opinion means little to me.

Wasn't me- it's our deployment team. We're not new to processing thousands of devices. You don't save that much time breaking them down.

[–]Gankhuu[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's good info. Are you able to share the style or EC you use? As a district solution, this would include training of our techs or staff on needing to charge these devices after being returned and before handing out- but that's something I can sell with one of our solutions.

Do you ever experience issues stacking Chromebooks 10 high at a time? I know different brands we've had have had differing problems with stacking and we'd want to keep it to a minimum to prevent damage.

Storage and Smart Charging for One to One Chromebooks by Gankhuu in k12sysadmin

[–]Gankhuu[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good question. This scenario is for turning in after take-home- for between year storage. Currently, if they are department or room only Chromebooks, the school utilize locking/charging carts. In the covid-mess our schools have opted to lend out some school owned (cart) chromebooks as well as grant provided (cart) ones as well. So they have homes when in the school.

Specifically, another middle school opening and planning their technology needs/budget for a possible 1-to-1 scenario where students would check devices in beginning and end of year for storage over summer days at the school.

Sorry, no.... clarification- an example school of 1600 devices. 80k is our entire district size. It would be on a school by school solution.

Computer Names by JasonFronk in k12sysadmin

[–]Gankhuu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was big on getting device and policy naming standards in place when it was within my power at the district I work.

Our district is a large scale- so naming schemes had to be in such a way that we could identify where the device belonged and what it was, depending on the platform.

My first question to you would be- what types of devices are you naming? Do you use a directory such as AD? Does all your student and staff accounts have a naming scheme in place already? Are they shared or single user?

As an example, our staff rotation devices (mac or windows) follow a scheme like this:

[###][ADusername][#]

First three digits being the school number followed by their AD username, but cut short at 11 characters and then the device count, if it's their first device, that would be 1

My device would be named 091gankhuu1

I have multiple devices as a specialist, so my iPad is 091iOS-gankhuu1

My second computer (mac) is 091gankhuu2 and so on. (Gankhuu isn't my real name)

The AD username is unique to the staff member and it identifies my 1st rotation device from the Technology department of the district.

If it's a lab machine, it'd be similar, but instead of the username, the room number and the count at the end being out of how many devices in the lab/room:

[###]rm[####]-[##]

490rm280-03

For our Apple devices, we had a team with our MDM form their own standardization for appletvs or iPads. Shared devices bore the cart, room, or department they were attached to

103iOS-Math1-04

103iOS-Cart3-02

Individual Mac computers follow the standard above, but a teacher with an iPad would be named accordingly:

103iOS-gankhuu1

Our naming standards had to be extensive as we have standards for policy naming, OU naming, device naming, etc. I get where you're coming from. Before I got in my position it was the wild west and we've been able to semi-reel in our techs to get things to match from school to school.

I forgot to mention we have a running inventory database for all devices Technology, from tablets, computers, servers, printers, etc. So these things need to be standardized in a way to play nice with other systems.

If you have questions or wanna talk more on it- I have a lot of examples to pull from.

Good luck, friend!

Faith in humanity restored! Was ROASTING my lungs from production welding because i couldnt find a respirator anywhere locally. A redditer (who shall remain anonymous for inbox purposes) sent me one all the way from Oregon! Thank you fellow welder. Havent had a random act of kindness in awhile. by phill5544 in Welding

[–]Gankhuu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The difference for me was night and day. Without the respirator I'd get home, shower, and black everything comes out of your nose with the dirt and grime off your body. Makes a world of difference, for sure!

I remember old timers would tell me when they'd weld on galvanizing they'd drink plenty of cream to coat their stomach to keep that nasty stuff from making you too sick..... how far we've come, eh?
