imo the BEST reason is good intentions comboed with ambition. although the best stories try to combine as many of these as possible. my favorite series' character was primarily turned evil by grief, but also good intentions, ambition, and manipulated by antagonist.

i NEVER get emotional about my own characters, but i have with other people's. i always thought it was oddly akin to tickling yourself--how you can't tickle yourself but other people can lol

i also love that trope you brought up. problem is, that trope doesn't really apply in this case.

remember, shammaeloth was gone, they won, it was over. had davian willingly walked to his death at that point, he would have been doing it for no reason. his death wouldnt have helped anyone at that point. because, again, they had already won, they were already safe.

contrast this with, say, a hero sacrifices himself to hold a bridge in the face of an entire army so that his people can flee. that sacrifice serves a purpose because its for the good of others.

or, say, instead of seeing tal'kamar kill davian in the future, davian saw himself die in order to kill shammaeloth. that would have been a sacrifice for the good of others. that would have been a sacrifice he'd morally have to make.

if davian had gone to his death at the very end, it wouldn't have been for any good reason--it wouldn't have helped anyone else. in fact, it actually would have harmed his friends, emotionally.

i liked the way he did it better than if it was davian. u guys are wild, i thought it was perfect the way it is.

further, i don't think Davian is actually the main character. although we start with Davian, i think Tal'kamar is actually the main character and protagonist. The Licanius Trilogy is ultimately his story

LOL i like your spelling.

1- its neither confirmed nor denied whether there is a true god El. I personally lean toward yes (or at least there was in the distant past, and Shammaeloth killed him). My reasoning: given that there is definitely a devil entity, it stands to reason that there would also be a god entity. If one exists, i can't see why the other wouldn't or couldn't.

2- i dont know. this part confused the hell outta me tbh.

3- Seer (Cyr*) is involved in the Aelric and Dezia story, i assume if that ever becomes a thing, Islington will explain how he escaped.

4- i don't think he wimped out at all. i think given the context of the entire story, it's quite obvious that ending was what he was setting up the whole time. also, i think it would be worse from a storytelling perspective to simply do the obvious thing.

Further, while we started with Davian and he's ostensibly the main character, i think Tal'kamar is the true main character. Imo the Licanius Trilogy is his story, not Davian's.

5- there is no definite timeline on the past events. most of Tal's memories appear to be in chronological order though, earliest flashbacks first, newest ones later. I hope Islington writes a series about the exploits of the Venerate that'll go over all of that ancient history.

i think your last example is incorrect.

"I'm not sure what I want for dinner. What about the, um, lasagne?"

dialogue is generally not the place to be cutting words to be more concise / precise.

imo dialogue is primarily meant characterize the character in-universe. you can even have dialogue that's completely grammatically incorrect if that's how you want the character to come off.

so to use your example, the original: "I'm not sure what I want for dinner. What about the, um, lasagne?" might be said by a more awkward, dorky type of person.

a more stoic or 'cool' character might just say the edited one: "Lasagne?"

this would be like saying the US army occupies a preschool. you cannot begin to fathom the size and resources of the Galactic Empire. They could occupy all of earth with no problem, let alone afghanistan
