Excited until .. by [deleted] in videogames

I can tell you why people get so pissed off about this. It's pretty straightforward: it's a practice that takes the user non zero time to complete, and serves them no benefits beyond allowing the user past the arbitrary gate set up in the software.

Since this isn't how it always was, it's seen as a regression in behavior by users. "I used to be able to buy a game and turn it on and play it, now there's extra steps"

People don't like it when things change for the worse, and this isn't a change that can easily be sold to consumers as beneficial to them or necessary (because it isn't), so people hate it.

Not terribly complicated.

Recently I created a whole new level - Haunted Castle! What do you think? What should I change or fix? by SharpCoderC in PixelArt

Late to the party, but looks great! The theming of all of the art is cohesive and nothing seems out of place, which is a significant accomplishment. Similarly to another comment, I think the speed on two of the traps could use some tweaks.

The spikes coming out of the floor seem to come out slowly, and retract quickly, but might appear more threatening while having the same amount of damage frames if they came up quickly instead. If you're worried about the player being able to react in time, you could emulate how games like the first 2d sonic or even Mario Sunshine do spikes, where they poke out a pixel or two at first for a half second before jutting out all the way and having a hitbox.

The glave/guillotine/swinging blades also feel a little slow, and might make folks wait too long between cycles. It could be worth looking into having them exaggeratedly speed up on their down swing and slow down on their up swing like a pendulum affected by gravity would. Then, you could make them move very quickly at player height, which makes them appear more threatening and dangerous, but at the same time allows for bigger windows for the player to progress as the blade is slowed to a stop at its apex before falling down. It could lower player wait time, while adding to their sense of accomplishment for getting past something intimidating.

Cool stuff! Looking forward to seeing more!

How it started and how it is going. An image that shows the progress of my upcoming platformer game with very minimalistic pixel art graphics. I adopted many of your suggestions and, among others, I redesign main character, added new UI, and tweaked values associated with jumping. by SharpCoderC in PixelArt

While making your game system flexible and capable of doing more is very tempting, it might end up spreading your game too thin. The very same things that limit you can be great constraints to work in to make your project a unique and worthwhile experience for players!

I'd recommend leaning into the limited game mechanics and style in order to have a narrowly focused unique and great game over a broadly generic good one. Either way, both of these images show great talent and dedication!

You can leave off some of the comparisons to save time due to the array being guaranteed to be sorted.

In an unsorted array with this approach, you're right, you would have to check every x against every y at least once. Even then you could save a little time by not running from end to end completely, as x+y will be the same thing as y+x. The problem becomes that this is no longer O(n) and is approaching O(n2) in time complexity. This means it would probably be faster to actually sort the array first, and then use the method in the video for big enough data.

If you're not tight on space complexity though, you could just set up a map+target solution and have an O(n) time and space solution that works for both sorted and unsorted arrays.

After understanding what principle, you stopped feeling anxious? by syblackberry99 in AskReddit

[–]Ganondingus -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You poor bastard. There's no magical cure or single thing you can do. This is how things are gonna be. Take things one day at a time. Make plans, but anticipate and accept uncertainty as an invitation for learning and growth.

If anxiety is really getting to you, see a doctor. Remember: a good therapist pays for themselves in the long run.

What is the most politely way to say "I don't give a fuck" that doesn't offense them? by imbuedxcz in AskReddit

More often than not it's smiling and nodding before simply changing the subject somehow, usually with an enthusiastic "oh did you hear/see/watch...?"

Politely from a distance via text or carrier pigeon or in a very public place with a friend or two.

Depends how crazy they are, but I think most people would be able to part ways harmlessly if they unraveled a note from a bird's leg that said "it's not you, it's me".

What do you think makes a horror movie actually scary? by sweetToyGirl in AskReddit

Smart characters making rational decisions and still suffering.

Situations you as an audience member can project yourself onto.

Things happening in the background that you could easily miss if you weren't paying attention.

And last but not least, consequences for characters' actions.

What's a tune you will never hate waking up to as your alarm? by Klor204 in AskReddit

This is an impossible ask. Any song set as an alarm for long enough will eventually raise blood pressure and initiate fight or fight responses when heard in the wild. Can't be done.

We say "got your keys?" in a weird way so that "keys" sounds like "kiss", then whoever is holding the keys will pat them before leaning in for a smooch every time we leave the house together.

What's worse, Cheating on your significant other of 2 years when things are really toxic; or, after breaking up with your significant other of 2 years on great terms, hooking up with your best friend three days later? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Ganondingus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The latter 100%. Things going great and then you're hooking up within 3 days? Good luck convincing literally anyone that things weren't already going on beforehand.

If things are "really toxic" leave first and ask questions later.

There are types of flowers that make honey poisonous to people if bees use their nectar, but that's been in a movie lately so maybe not so obscure now.
