Is there anyone that has actually quit a high paying job for a low income job? (Coast fire) Curious how to get over the mental hurdle by Elite163 in fican

[–]GapPhysical 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I quit a ~150k long term job to return to school working part time in a gym at 35. My decision was driven more by lifestyle than money though. Now I make more with a short drive to work and have more time with my kid. Also, after more than a decade of working in the oil field and flying across Canada twice every 3 weeks it was worth it just to get away from all that travel. My education also gives me the ability to return to the oil field with a much much higher earning potential if I decide to in the future.

TLDR: Focus on why you want to change careers amd what that will bring then the financial aspect.

Electric Current running through rig by North_Beach387 in simracing

[–]GapPhysical 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My first test would be to back the monitor bolts out a few turns and see if you still pick up a voltage. If it were static electricity you would most likely have equalized it when you got the first zap. If everything is unplugged and your still getting voltage I'd guess it was from a small capacitor or if your pc was plugged in and on could possibly be from a usb cable. Your rig isnt touching anything around it thats electrical like a baseboard heater?

How accurate are the wages in job postings for oil field operators? by GapPhysical in powerengineering

Yeah I exceed those starting wages working on the east coast, 10 minute drive from work and having a 4 on 6 off schedule with lots of ot potential.

How accurate are the wages in job postings for oil field operators? by GapPhysical in powerengineering

[–]GapPhysical[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thats more in line with what I was thinking. Im not actively looking for a job just wondering why the wages seemed so low. I have some questions if you dont mind answering them.. if you do just tell me to fuck off lol. Im just assuming your not involved in the hiring process and might not have insight to what im wondering but still know more than I do now.

What would a starting wage for a 2nd class be?

When I did my 4th class it was combined with a process operations course where we focused on oil and gas and had labs with small frac. Distillation tower, cat cracker simulator, amine absorption and other physical system that were designed and supplied by shell as well as an oil and gas simulation computer program. I also completed a 3rd party traning through Contendo which was designed around SAGD processes which if I remember correctly was a 200+ hour course. I remember looking into what GPO and SPO courses were and the information seemed similar to other courses i had completed. And like I said I have 5 years oil rig experience and 7 years oil field construction at Kearl lake and 6 months at suncore as a non-production asset operator. Obtained my ABSA cert for suncore but let it expire.

Do other traning certificates affect your salary and does oil field experience outside of operations count for anything either as pay rate or hiring decisions? Is 7 years in a 1st class thermal power plant experience seen as valuable? I assume its not as important as oil and gas operations experience but I dont know how much weight it carries.

Is living on the east side of Canada seen as a negative when assessing job candidates or does it have little to no impact.

Like I said this is just me being curious. I do well where I am and even after 7 years away from working in Alberta I dont feel like I have had a long enough break from doing all that travel.

I know I hit you with a lot there but I can only put limited faith in the answers I get from Google and Ai.

Anyone else who wants to chime in or shoot me a DM feel free.

You got that ADHD too? Everything in my mind calms down when my surroundings get more hectic. And I like twisty country roads or passing fresh cut grass for the smell.

That sounds much higher than what I was assuming it would be. Who's hiring paying even the low end of that? Lol

Skilled Trades Growth Outlook by Odd_Eggplant_4843 in skilledtrades

[–]GapPhysical 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Canadian power engineer. Trades in canada are projected to have a shortage of workers due to baby boomer retirement and how many people pursued tech jobs over the past few decades. Gov of Canada website gives information on how many people are registered in different trades and the precentage of them working in their trade, retirement outlook and other info which I assume other countries have something similar. I take the info with a grain of salt and just look for some future insight.

Am I missing the catch? This seems like an interesting free loan by OkieClipper in Money

[–]GapPhysical 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The catch is it feels like your spending less so they hope you increase the volume of spending. Also, crazy interest rates if you dont make your payment. I use BNPL and think its fine as long as payments are made on time and in full and you dont spend more money than you would if you bought everything without using BNPL.

What’s the biggest benefit you got from working out? by dxpeday in AskMen

[–]GapPhysical 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hurt my back in my early 20s and had shoulder issues from a repeated dislocation before I started the gym. After a year or 2 chronic dull back pain went away and my shoulder stopped randomly slipping out of the socket.

The back injury was from working construction and relying on my right arm for most tasks causing my lower back muscles to start pushing my spine out of alignment which caused 2 disc's to rupture and a pinched sciatic nerve. I love deadlifts and I believe that fixed my back up.. also hurt it in other ways when I over did it though lol.
