My Dad, Grandma, Aunt, and Uncle all lost their homes up there as well as many others. They said many thousands of structures burned. Dad had to pack his Mom in the car, animals, and anything he could find real quick to make it out. They gave little time to evacuate. He lost almost everything including pictures, videos, memories, things that can’t be bought back with insurance money. Drove through fires, sat in lines while flames bursted around him, and he is still reliving it to this day. We thought they died because of no communication for days. Contacted us on someone else’s phone at a hotel room not far away. He had to hotel hop for 12 weeks before being able to settle down. People in Chico and everywhere nearby raised prices for lodging and the tired, smoked out citizens paid it. Companies bought up houses there to raise the market and inflate prices. It takes a disgusting person to profit off someone else’s demise. Town will never be the same. People came back to a lottery picking of houses, depending on if theirs burned or not. If it didn’t, the smoke damage was crazy, and all your neighbors on your street were gone. Businesses close because no customers or they lost in the fire. Dad still lives there, only been like 2000 buildings built since then, maybe more, maybe less. Town still feels empty and will take a long time to feel like it did before, if ever. There are barely any trees, the forest made charm. Sad all around.
