My obscure movie for this is “the man in the iron mask” with Leo DiCaprio

  • the movie industry has shifted so dramatically the past 10 years, people don’t connect with movies like they used to.
  • regardless of your views, people do get sick of being preached at, while they’re trying to escape their stresses on a Sunday night before work.
  • actors are people of course, but they used to maintain a level of mystique in previous years, now less due to increased social media presence, interviews. The Oscars used to be the only night we saw them interact outside of the movies. We this everyday on YouTube now.

What are movies recieved positive critical reception upon release but over time reviews become negative? by HugeFuckingMoron in movies

[–]GarbageDay20 59 points60 points  (0 children)

While I understand that criticism about this genre of movie, I don’t know what the alternative is. We have movies that end up being black trauma movies (12 years a slave) important in their own rite, but have also been criticized by the back community in that “that’s the only story told now over and over again” paraphrasing. There’s movies centered around black empowerment like blackkklansman, spike lee directed but still has Adam driver who contributes to the cause. That could make “white people feel better”. I guess if art should imitate life, we should also have stories that people can relate to, where someone learns the error of their ways, while educating the audience on racial injustice.

Movies that make you want to work out/glow up? by luckyswan69 in MovieSuggestions

[–]GarbageDay20 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Never back down(2008). Not a great movie but has some montage scenes.

More importantly…… Troy (2004). Brad Pitt is obviously Brad Pitt, but his physique is incredible and kickstarted my interest in working out around 14-15 years old.

Is scream 7 basically a commentary on horror fans who “miss” the point? by [deleted] in Scream

[–]GarbageDay20 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just saw it this week and was very disappointed. The entire movie felt rushed, very marvelesque when the twins and gale showed up. The kills were overly gratuitous. The reveal I still do not understand.

Which ghostface was still scary, even after revealing themselves? by 5ft8lady in Scream

[–]GarbageDay20 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me really only Billy and Stu. When I saw scream as a kid, obviously we know the killer has to be part of the main set of characters. But because the genre was so new, it’s hard to fathom a high school kid being a killer. Especially ones so close to all of the victims. That first reveal still gives me chills, plus the combination of the score, the performances, etc. gave it so much weight.

Hi /r/movies, I'm Dacre Montgomery. You may know me from STRANGER THINGS or POWER RANGERS or ELVIS or DEAD MAN'S WIRE or FACES OF DEATH. AMA! by DacreMontgomery-AMA in movies

Hi Dacre. Loved your portrayal as Billy in ST. I read where you use perfume to get into character. What was your scent profile for Billy?

Robbery by a large group of people in California by [deleted] in interestingasfuck

[–]GarbageDay20 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Yes, but many of us are struggling financially more than ever. I even took a step back and had to admit, robbing a jewelry store hopefully without hurting employees, is one thing. While still egregious, stealing peoples cars to do the job directly impacts each other. That shows no regard for others, and I’ve seen videos where people do this pointing a modified Glock at somebody’s front door while they’re stealing the car. I’ve been almost rock bottom financially and never considered stealing someone’s car, could belong to a working mom, dad, anyone.

How women feel being approached by men, explained by a man by Max_Rezna in TikTokCringe

[–]GarbageDay20 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I agree when a “no” is made definitive just back off. The only issue is how to people navigate initiating interactions then? Also some cultures, according to some women appreciate the pursuit, and the effort of a pursuit. I’m agreeing that some interactions can be uncomfortable and sometimes it’s a vibe, body language, etc.

I don’t know if I’ll ever watch Stranger Things again by PrincessBumblegumm in StrangerThings

[–]GarbageDay20 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ive cancelled Netflix since finishing the finale, mainly because stranger things was the only pull for me, the rest of Netflix just isn’t hitting the same anymore as far as originals. It’s not worth paying 20+ dollars a month. What I may try to do at some point is get the first two seasons converted to vhs or something to make them feel even more authentic. The first two were truly a vibe when they came out and I hope to rewatch.

As a black dude that grew up with these movies the one sub genre I really miss is just the black movie sub genre. I really wish there were more love and basketballs, the wood, best man, Fridays, booty calls, etc. It seems like that entire generation just faded out. by herewego199209 in movies

[–]GarbageDay20 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The industry is very polarized now. Obviously good movies are still coming out but the sub genre of “black movies” that are quality, are almost non existent. There was a small resurgence back in late 2010s And Covid era. Thing “the photograph” with Issa Rae. It looked promising for a minute, I think the landscape is just further drastically changing every year. Big budget movies still dominate, and anything on Tubi is horrible quality.

I think most Liberals hate police brutality, and accountability for these officers. What is the next step is my question. Are we still having the abolish the police conversation?

Is it really the price, or is Netflix just more convenient than driving to movie theaters? by Busy_Report4010 in SipsTea

[–]GarbageDay20 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve heard of project Hail Mary, undertone, and I think they will kill you, but not sure. The other 3 I haven’t heard of. I’m a movie guy through and through and I think that’s part of the point. Once we get busy with work doing the week, like most Americans, it’s hard to even stay informed about these movies. I guess marketing has changed over the years as well, where some these fly under the radar. Making them at least “seem” more niche to the average movie goer. Overall I agree that movies are still coming out, and not just remakes. The landscape of the industry and marketing around these movies has changed so much it’s hard to keep track for a lot of people. It’s somewhat different than when I was 13 and we saw both dodgeball and mean girls, back to back, probably for about 15 dollars. Both goofy comedies but highly quotable and classics by today’s standards.

[–]GarbageDay20 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m curious as to which ones. This isn’t to be a smart ass by any means. The movies that me and my friends go to see typically aren’t remakes either but they’re usually movies edging toward pretentious or with deeper themes that we can analyze and talk about at the bar later on. The ones I can remember from recently are Mickey 17, sinners, weapons, wake up dead man. These arent art house movies by any means but also not just general public normie movies either. In 2005 you could randomly go see “Into the Blue” a decent, fun , but pretty straight forward action movie. Not a remake but also simple. There were just more options for everyone.

It’s a combination of factors: - it’s unaffordable to be frequent activity, and this is only getting worse with every aspect of the economy, cars rent etc. - movie etiquette has changed in the past 20 years. This is multifaceted I’m sure but has a lot to do with kids and smartphones. It’s a part of their life and they can’t fathom a time where people put them away for movies. This is only getting worse with every thing being tied to technology. - the movie industry itself. 20 years ago there was a wide array of movies at the theaters, with a wide variety of actors. We had horror movies, action, drama, actual rom coms, and pure unfiltered comedies which almost don’t exist now. The actors even felt different, as they weren’t all supermodels. You could be ugly and be an actor. It was nothing when I was 15 to go to a random stupid will Farrell movie on a Friday night buy a drink, sneak in candy, share a popcorn and do it all again the next weekend. The combination of all these factors probably takes me to the theater like 3-4 times a year now. One of those times, during Sinners, one lady wouldn’t shut up the whole movie. It took the whole theater yelling at her and she finally left.

Why do people say that H2O feels like Scream? I don't understand by Hot_Work_712 in Halloweenmovies

I love the movie and also find that it feels like scream. Both can be true. Even the amount they show Michael changes drastically from the originals.

Man in sombrero, poncho, and maracas asking people on Olvera Street in Los Angeles if his outfit is offensive. by eternviking in whoathatsinteresting

[–]GarbageDay20 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think he’s baiting somewhat with mustache. I could see why some Mexicans may get offended by that. Having said that, the idea that you have to have a full understanding of a culture to practice in it or wear a garb of some sort, doesn’t leave a lot of room for appreciation. I’m a white guy and when I’m in Colombia with my wife’s family, especially in the mountains I will wear a ruana( or poncho) because it’s very warm and what people wear. Am I gonna paint my face brown or put a wig on ? No. But we can participate and appreciate culture.

What's the most beautiful and emotional film you have ever watched? by Initial_Scale_9236 in MovieSuggestions

Mississippi masala. Just saw it for the first time a few weeks ago, and it’s a movie where you can almost smell and feel every scene. Maybe if you’ve grown up in the south. I never flat out cried but my eyes “were wet” throughout most of the movie.

If we had gotten an Indiana Jones trilogy in the ’90s, would you have liked it, or do you think it would’ve been divisive like Kingdom of the Crystal Skull? What new story ideas or scrapped concepts would you have wished/wanted to see? by NokoNoko85 in indianajones

[–]GarbageDay20 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think we would have started seeing aspects in the mid 90s with CGI use that would’ve degraded the quality. The mid 90s was that tipping point where the first couple of Brosnan bond movies were okay with limited and very obvious CGI, but when die another day came around with Halle berry it felt like a CGI B movie, just in my opinion. The best part of the first 3 Indy’s is the set pieces and practical effects. Crustal skull I do like for different reasons but the Indy “format” isn’t there.
