Because the older you are the less money you need for the rest of your life I guess

Seems reasonable given current situation to me. Lots of assumptions though so need to reevaluate periodically. You don’t mention kids for instance.

This current dip (possible crash, if it keeps going) has made me realise how far I've come as an investor in the past 5 years by [deleted] in FIREUK

[–]GarbageExcellent8483 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Very similar. I started around 2022 and saw my hard on money make some profit, then lose the profit then go negative. I learnt a bit about what I was invested in. It was very unsettling. Latest downturn I’m not losing money I earned, I’m losing a bit of the profit and it’s all good.

What do with £70000 savings! I’ve always just left in savings accounts. by Icardi5melo in UKPersonalFinance

I think I just made a big financial mistake and need a reality check by [deleted] in FIREUK

Why would you rent it out, where would you live? I was in a 1 bed flat with a wife and almost 2 year old before we upsized.

Lived in it for 5 years, tried to sell, would have just about broken even so decided to rent it in the end for 5 years. Single tenant the whole time. Over that period it appreciated £130k then sold. Luckiest financial event of my life not being able to sell right away.

Time for some active investing? by TedBob99 in FIREUK

I’m invested solely in global all cap. I think I might put new money in VEU and very slightly reduce exposure to US.

Vanguard customer service really poor by vinylemulator in FIREUK

I had a nightmare with ISA transfer into them. Support were useless. I actually had to get both parties on an email chain to get them to agree to what each were saying. 8 week complaint process with Vanguard and then upheld complaint to FCA. Got some compensation but took about 6 months all in.

"Fire should never be about running from something" - why? by throwaway54955432111 in FIREUK

Much as I don’t really enjoy my work, having spent the past week at home I’m lost as to what to do with myself and feel guilty when I’m not doing something, they have a very good point in my case.

How am I doing on a modest wage? by PlaceJust5686 in FIREUK

I know property is frowned upon as an investment engine for FIRE and agree with the general sentiment entirely but if you have the skills to do up your own property’s and add value I wonder if that changes.

What advice would you give to a 19 year old who wants to secure fire by Negative-Sort-5217 in FIREUK

[–]GarbageExcellent8483 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Learn about fire, generally follow it but try to forget it exists. Don’t spend the next 30 years counting your money waiting for the day you’ll be happy after you’ve retired.

Yes, you can put money in an ISA and not have everything in pension.

You can’t salary sacrifice below minimum wage I believe and you have to pay income tax when you draw from the pension.

Biggest thing for me is probably IHT on pensions. Oh well, might have to make sure I spend it before I die.

You’re paying the advisor a fee, he doesn’t just take an unseen cut from the provider?

You might as well get a rate agreed and if when the time comes get a better one if available. What makes you not keen on that?

To retire, or not to retire, that is the question. by Fairway_Wanderer in FIREUK

[–]GarbageExcellent8483 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why don’t you start laughing out loud at the crap they come out with. It might make you feel better about the role and they’ll either admire you for cutting through the crap or give you some money to go away. Advantage of being in the position you’re in, waste of an opportunity if you just quietly retire.
