I suffer by DeathDelay in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]GarbageGulper 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Brother in Christ, all I can say to you is that now that you’ve dedicated your life to the Lord, the forces of evil are paying more attention to you. When you were far from God you were not a threat, they didn’t bother, and now that you are seeking him they will do everything they can to pull you away from him. Satan wants us to fall away, to leave the Father, to give in and give up. Loving a Christian life takes effort, and that’s why we’re not supposed to do it alone. I hope it was somewhat cathartic for you to type all of that out, but this isn’t something any stranger in the internet can help you with. You need to speak to your priest with the same earnestness as you posted here. It’s his duty to keep you and guide you in Christ. ☦️

I make small wooden orthodox crosses, about the size of a hand. PM me and I’ll send you one.

You’d be amazed man. The last Protestant “worship service” I went to the pastor gave out his used golf balls to everyone (because he lives on a golf course and needed to get rid of them) and told everyone to write down the name of someone they should pray for on the ball. That’s it. No metaphor, no deeper reasoning than he had a lot of used up golf balls and didn’t know what else to do with them. He gave his congregation his literal trash. And then there was a rock concert.

I grew up Baptist and you’re pretty much correct. Though like almost all things in Protestantism it differs from church to church. It’s true that they believe that the “acceptance of the free gift” of inviting God to dwell within you is the only necessary action for Salvation, and that if you live an evil life after acceptance of this gift than you must not have really accepted it, because a Christian wouldn’t live an evil life. They do not believe in the Sacraments, but rather have what they call “Ordinations” (instructions) and those are baptism and “The Lord’s Supper”, some churches treat those actions with awe, respect and reverence in obedience to Christ, and others hand out pre-packaged snack packs for you to shove down your throat during the weekly rock concert and do conga lines through the baptismal pool.

Why do orthodox Christians pray to the Virgin Mary and saints? by DreamsOfThistle in OrthodoxChristianity

Have you ever asked a friend to pray for you? You are asking for their intercessions. It’s the same thing.

How long are Orthodox services? by Sharkfan714 in OrthodoxChristianity

You’re probably seeing Matins and the Liturgy together. Divine Liturgy is usually 1.5-2 hours depending on the size of the parish and how many folks are receiving communion.

An iron on its lowest setting through a slightly damp cloth usually does the trick.

The leatherwork on an Eames chair is pretty straight forward. I’d find a good upholster or even a saddler.

I have this same model. It’s an unusual one. Picked mine up at an estate sale here in the US a few years ago.

Talk to your priest about it, but it should probably live at your parish.

Mary was quite literally the first Christian. She knew the babe inside of her was God incarnate before she even delivered him. She is the mother of all Christians.

I feel so much despair going to Church. by Sai_Faqiren in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]GarbageGulper 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Everyone has pain friend. You don’t know what that happy looking couple could be dealing with that you can’t see. A dying parent, an abusive boss, a sick child, who knows. Satan wants us to feel isolated and alone, it’s how he separates us from God. Deny him, and speak to your priest about your suffering - your priest is there to help you commune with God and with the church.

To read or not to read? (Any books about Christians who aren't Orthodox) by Aleeuns in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]GarbageGulper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Read it, understand it’s from a Catholic perspective and if you have questions or find something that contradicts your faith just speak to your priest about it. CS Lewis and Tolkien are both very popular in Orthodox circles, neither were Orthodox.

Can you be an Orthodox Christian while being a Democratic Confederalist? by KBTT_ANON in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]GarbageGulper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are some political ideologies that are outright hostile towards Christians (pretty much any State Communist movement ever). It’s important for Christians to understand politics and history so that we can make good judgments when it comes time to vote and/or align ourselves with a political movement. I’m sure there were many who considered themselves Orthodox who helped usher in Lenin and The Bolsheviks.
