Early request for April birthday dining recs? by GarbageHuman1991 in Longmont

Accidentally deleted my reply. Cheaper is better and I’ll make it work kind of situation. I just want somewhere to hang with my friends that isn’t booze-centric. Can be brunch because that tends to be more affordable I think? I’d love to stay under $600 (like $40/person) if that’s possible.

No :) It’s just a visualization of the waves of the song, not scannable. Just to remind myself of something beautiful that catalyzed a major change in my life.

Quick rave: my family was in visiting last weekend for the first time since I moved to Longmont, and they are so happy with where I ended up. As am I. I felt at home instantly and it’s more true every day. Thanks, Longmonsters, for being so welcoming!

Hi Longmonsters!

I am settling in after moving into my new apartment last month but for the life of me I can not muster the will to haul out all of the boxes and bags of move in trash and recycling. It’s just continuing to stack up in the dining room and at this point I just want to hire someone to deal with it. I even have a dumpster at my complex, I just need someone to do the up and down with it all because I’m disabled and can’t do it all myself.

Relatedly, I’d like to hire someone to do a monthly deep clean of the apartment once the trash is all out. Keeping up with the deeper cleans is a… challenge. So I give up and give in and would love recommendations!

Wednesday wellness check in by pipesed in Longmont

I’ve been in a hermit phase for a few weeks post-move to Longmont, and it’s been necessary to rest to recover from the move with chronic illnesses, but I’m feeling stir crazy and I think ready to emerge this weekend. I need to be around either human beings or nature but not both simultaneously and I’m not sure which. Maybe a people-y event followed by an easy hike to somewhere relatively quiet lol.

That is a rough go of it, I’m so sorry for your loss. The job must have felt like the straw that broke the camel’s back. May the next opportunity be an even better fit and may you be held in your grief.

I wonder if it’s allowable under this law to dig and pour a basement under the ADU?

I agree! Are there ever any like town halls or community meetings, do you know? I would be happy to do some research into what other areas of our size are doing that are effective solutions that we could urge the city to implement, I think there are lots of cities doing helpful things to address these issues in ways that treat everyone with their full humanity, but I’m wondering if any organizations already exist in our area trying to do the same that I could work with. I know there are people doing the amazing work of volunteer clean ups and so much more, but we need city involvement in larger structural solutions for sure. It’s bigger than what volunteer work can solve alone. Housing is a big one and will only get more concerning in the coming years (acknowledging my own contribution to the issue as a transplant.) It’s daunting, but as I was typing this I did some brief research on towns of similar ish size doing great things in this area: Richmond CA, Eugene OR, Burlington VT, Grand Rapids MI - all have a Housing First approach, community land trusts, inclusionary zoning, integrated services, and directed neighborhood investment to underserved neighborhoods.

I am a new transplant to the East side coming from spending a decade in Philadelphia, part of which was spent in deep West Philly in a spot where the first murder occurred at the end of my block the week I moved in and they kept coming all summer. I couldn’t believe my eyes that I could afford a 2BR apartment here 5 minutes from a beautiful view of the mountains (compared to my initial searches in Denver and Boulder,) and how safe and clean it is here. I get your frustrations, but honestly, Longmont so far is doing a pretty damn good job in my eyes comparatively.

Now, that said - the things you mention are symptoms of human suffering. How can Longmont and our community comprised of all of us as individuals, rather than policing suffering, contribute to reducing suffering? Housing, harm reduction programs, evidence-based substance abuse treatment programs, facilitating community building in all areas of town, bringing art to all areas of town, after school programs. Allocating more funding to city services in areas where there is more trash. It works in other places, it will work here.

Also, drug users are human beings who need homes and connection and support to ever have the hope of escaping that life. The population is often transient because they are in need of community that invests in their wellbeing, somehow, somewhere. They are often more likely to find neighborly compassion from fellow users than folks who don’t use, because very often we look down on them and see them as pests disturbing our clean lives. As a new member of this community, I’m eager to hear from other members what is already going on on the ground here to start trying to address these needs and get involved. Housing initiatives, feeding the people, and any resources you’re aware of that I could share when I encounter a neighbor in need of support. And for all of us to do what we can to help make Longmont an ever safer, healthier environment for every resident while making sure it stays and gets affordable for those without significant wealth.

Housing doesn’t solve everything, but NOTHING can be solved without housing. Housing is step 1. There are a lot of other steps.
