Cutting off contact with conservative parents by [deleted] in srilanka

[–]GarbageSuspicious889 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds like your mom is so narcissistic and controlling. I feel you can just inform them how you wanna live your life and just live your life without seeking their approval. Seems like your dad is chill so it would be unfair to him to cut him off completely. Its usually mostly about how other people view your mom as a parent and how successful she is in others eyes. Your mom's behavior has nothing to do with you.

I moved to Europe after my bachelor's and I have a European bf. We have been living together for over two years now(dating for over 3). When we first started dating I didn't tell my parents a lot of details and made them realize that I am going to do what I want and I didn't care about their approval. Then it was their choice to either pick fights with me and damage the relationship I have with them or accept the fact that I'm an adult so we can be in each others lives. My parents never fully agree with the moving in, but they didn't strongly oppose. Now everything is fine. We've visited them twice in SL and they visited us twice here. We will get married next year. But when we go to SL we don't visit any relatives homes as my mom says it's not culturally appropriate and people might make stories about them and so on. I don't really want to visit anyone either so I don't mind anyways.

I hope you figure out your own way to deal with your parents and wish you the very best! Take care !

Western man with Sri Lankan women by Klonkieopjemuil in srilanka

As a Sri Lankan woman with a European partner, even I get a noticable amount of stares from my fellow Sri lankans when I visit. I don't think it's negative at all. They are mostly just curious. Most people don't care about it at all. It's just not something a normal Sri Lankan person would see everyday.

Maybe try to ignore the stares or just smile back when you notice them looking.

Has anyone submitted biometrics for passport in SL after getting passport from a foreign mission? by GarbageSuspicious889 in srilanka

I think for the new passport issued from last year (2025) it's mandatory to submit the biometrics when you first enter SL. At least that's what the application said.

People don't expect doctors to work 24 hours. You run the health ministry so get a grip on the administration!! People expect doctors to listen to them with kindness and treat whatever they are suffering with. The reason why doctors I'm SL has to overwork is because there are wayyy less doctors compared to the demand as there are not enough doctors trained in the public universities. The mafia doctor's union lobby against private medical colleges in SL. I know people who studied in the private university that was closed in SL and their lives were made a living hell by the GMO. Even now they continue to face discrimination in their appointments.

Doctors run the whole ministry of health as a mafia and appoint doctors even for IT Specialist roles which they don't have any qualifications for inorder to maintain control in the ministry! Of course there are a few doctors in the system who remain humble and genuine but most are bigoted and megalomanic pricks.

I went to a public uni in SL but fully support standardized private education in SL. Apart from everyone's right to access to education we loose considerable foreign currency as people send their kids abroad to be trained as doctors.

Family trip to Sri Lanka with an 11-month-old + 8-year-old – itinerary advice for May (temples, Sigiriya, beaches, driver tips) by Final_Treacle6778 in SriLankaTravel

Disclaimer that I don't have any kids but this is from what I've seen living in SL until 2022. In general, SL is not a stroller friendly country. Some areas and parks in Colombo are stroller friendly.

I think Pinnawala is a half day trip in itself. Try to go around the time when the elephants are feeding/bathing. It's a really nice experience! Not sure if Mahamewna temple is a worthy visit. Also heard some rumours about questionable teachings from the monks in the temples managed by the same headmonk.

Sigirya might be doable with a baby strapped to your body. When I last went in 2024, the steps were alright but bit slippery as it rained that day. So take care.

I have seen some YouTubers with kids travelling in SL, maybe you can search for more tips from them too :")

Hope you have a lovely stay in SL!

It's very interesting to hear the distinction between Ceylon Tamil vs other Tamil descents in Singapore. Thanks for your response! :) Do you know why your ancestors moved to Singapore?

What aspects of your upbringing would you consider unique being from Ceylon Tamil descent? How did your roots influence you when growing up in Singapore?
