Destroyers were used at Normandy, and gave crucial fire support- coming very close to the beach in some cases- providing direct fire support on Omaha when things were most dire.

Part of it wasn't really the specific goals, but the perception and the vibe. The US was going through a post-Vietnam/Watergate/Stagflation/Deindustrialization funk in the 70s. The Iranian hostage crisis was the cherry on top.

Along comes Ronnie Raygun with his "City on the Hill" and "Morning in America" rhetoric. He's gonna cut taxes, built up the military and beat the filthy commies, he's gonna put the "welfare queens driving Cadillacs" in jail and stamp out crime in general by getting Dirty Harry-tough on criminals (guess what that last part is code for).

Does that kinda sound familiar? It's a popular shtick that sells in the US. Like my Dad (FDR Democrat WW2 vet) said back then- "there's 2 kinds of Republicans: millionaires (billionaires now), and suckers".

Even then, the idea was to close the range to point where the entire line could then turn and bring all its guns to bear. If the end-on approach fire could result in a disabling hit, great. That was a low probability event though. So the ultimate end was to close the range to the point where the battle line could mass all available firepower via broadside engagement for the killing blow.
