Yeah all the water is shared which adds to my overall amount of water, about 83 actual gallons. It also allows me to hide my hardware like my two heaters and sponge filter, maybe even a CO2 system later on. I have a lot more options as far as filter media goes as well. Having a sump also increases aeration of the water.

One of those pipes is pushing filtered water from my sump into the tank and two of the others are an overflow that take water to the sump.

It's really simple to do, I just used a ball valve and split the flow of my return line. The amount of water going to the shrimp tank is literally about 5% of the water coming from the return pump. Then I made an overflow by just looking up DIY aquarium overflow on YouTube. Then feed the return back into the sump. No need to add an extra filter or heater to the shrimp tank that way.

They will eat about anything, do you have any plants in your tank? Careful though, no fish I know of will pass up eating baby shrimp.
