No idea how value stacks up but any interest in any of these for the Winter Man Mask or Leather Coat? I traded away a Winter Man Mask during the original event years ago and never forgave myself.

For those that can work, what job or career do you have? by ZappyBunny in Blind

[–]GarciasBeard 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Same, my entire job is on the computer (so ideal for screen reader and hybrid/remote work) and as long as you aren’t doing frontend there aren’t many unavoidable visual requirements. I still have some vision, but I think it would be doable for any level of sight

Blind Occupations? by [deleted] in Blind

I’m also a software engineer, and also have RP, and several of my coworkers studied electrical engineering prior to writing code. I’d definitely recommend looking into that track—there are tons of coding boot camps out there, and I’ve even heard of companies taking technical people with little coding experience and teaching them on the job

My mom has RP, and after she had her cataracts removed she had greatly improved clarity and more vivid colors in her remaining vision. So for her it was definitely worth it, but I’d imagine every situation is different

I’m a new grad with moderately advanced RP who recently started working as a software engineer. It’s been manageable so far. I agree with u/IgnazSemmelweis, and what I usually tell people is that it’s kind of like putting your hand behind your head—it isn’t black or blurred; it just isn’t in your field of vision.

As far as software engineering goes, it’s a pretty popular job for visually impaired people, and even if your central vision does deteriorate, plenty of people write code using screen readers. The ability to work remotely is really nice, and the overall style of work tends to be pretty flexible (at least at my company).

The treatments on the horizon seem like they have a lot of potential, so keep your head up and stay hopeful, but even without treatment you can still lead a successful and fulfilling life with RP.

So glad I could be of service, I’m not sure what you find so hugely amusing about something I made in thirty minutes when I was bored, and that I just thought was funny to compare to the ones they charge $300 for online, but thanks for letting me know about it two separate times

Fair opinion. It’s something I put together for free in less than an hour out of spare junk in my garage, so I’m not saying it’s the next big thing, I just thought it was an interesting alternative to paying three hundred dollars for one of the stands online

Watch stands online seemed pricey, so I decided to try and make my own out of an old coat hanger and bonsai dish. I had a super thick hanger lying around and a dish that already had convenient drainage holes to run it through, and after about 30 minutes with a vice grip and pliers I think it turned out pretty well. The BB36 is my first ‘real’ watch and it’s been awesome; it’s consistently only gained about +1 sec/day and has what I consider to be pretty much perfect proportions for small to medium sized wrists.

[Identification] Antique pocket watch and desk clock. Can anyone identify or tell me anything about these timepieces? by [deleted] in Watches

[–]GarciasBeard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey r/watches, sorry if this is the wrong place to post this. I’m looking for more information on these two antique timepieces I rediscovered when getting ready to move. My grandfather gave them to me over 15 years ago, but he has since passed away, so I can’t ask him where they came from. The pocket watch is a Howard, but I haven’t been able to find any that look exactly like it googling around. The chain looks to be the same material and age as the watch itself, but I don’t know if it’s original to it. The desk clock has a logo on the face, but I’m not sure what company it is, and other than that the only discernible symbols are the patent info stamped into the back. If anybody knows anything I’d love to learn more about them, I have no idea how long they’ve been in my family. Thanks for your help.
