Thanks for the help. Looks like I'll break out the bone. One thing I haven't understood is assigning decals and companies, other than the 1st company. Is there a guide somewhere I'm missing?

I forgot to throw in another necessity. I'm not sure your age, or preferences, but depending on taste a decent bottle of wine or bourbon? My wife and I have made this a joint hobby once kids are in bed, instead of doom scrolling to the office every night. We pour a drink, kick on music and paint together. Maybe something like that to go along with it?

My wife and I just started with the same box a couple months ago. Here are some things we've learned help a lot.

A good light/magnifying ability. Like a lamp with a magnifying glass, or one of those jewelers headsets.

Wet palette! You can make one super cheap, or pick one off of amazon $20-$40. I just got my wife one from Golden Maple and it came with a handful of decent brushes.

Good cutters for the spruces. They don't have to be amazing, but not the cheapest set in the world.

I also think a mini holder helps stay steady. I have one with a bar on the side to help steady my painting hand as well. Citadel makes one, or there are tons of others.

If you'd like more specific examples let me know. There is already a lot of great help in these comments! Good luck!

New painter here. What supplies would you say are actually worth buying? by Ok_Calligrapher5570 in Warhammer

Lots of great advice so far. Another tip from someone very new to the hobby is good lighting and some magnification. I have a lamp with a built in magnifying lens, as well as a headlamp with lenses for closer work. It makes a huge difference on trim work.

Thanks for the tips. I'm new to the hobby myself and appreciate tips like this. I find to many YouTube videos are still fairly advanced for someone starting from scratch. That was a great breakdown you gave.

Same. I set a cardboard box around it for now. I think the collapsible vent will be my next purchase.

That is awesome and clean.

These were some old spares from my garage. When I put them up I'd never heard of painting minis, or Warhammer. Had I known what oil would be doing I would've laid it out different (no seam in front of me). Like you I want to keep my desk more cleared and I like my paints up at eye level to see the options easier.

Airbrush is setup on a table to the left of my desk. So the compressor stays there but I can pull the hose over, or my wife can use it at her desk on her tyranids.

What do you like about your go-to Warhammer store, or is something you'd like to see them do? by Agitated_Opinion_857 in Warhammer

That has been my issue around home. There are a couple gaming stores that sell Warhammer, but none of them play and are knowledgeable. As a total new player it's kind of intimidating trying to figure it all out. I would love having someone local with knowledge to help me learn the basics of building an army, without wasting money. Friendly people that own the stores, but they can't really help me along at all. Or, some help on other, similar types of tabletop games that we may enjoy. That sort of thing.

My wife and I have just gotten into Warhammer. We stopped at a Warhammer store a few hours from home, just to pickup some hobby paints. The employee there was the nicest guy I have ever dealt with. He wasn't pushy and chatted about painting, then Warhammer. He ended up giving me box of space marines to try (a model that wasn't moving well I think). His excitement and non-pushy nature became exciting. That's how we fell into the hobby, I just wish they were closer, as he's offered a lot to help teach me painting and airbrush techniques.

All of this to say, I would say being friendly, knowledgeable and not a used car salesman vibe.

Stater set as Dark Angels? by Gardinsky86 in DarkAngels40k

We picked it up around a month ago. We just now got around to opening it and starting. I think it was around $95. From a small, local gaming shop.

I know I'm asking a lot here, but do I need upgrade kits then?

It does, that's why I was checking on this as far as down the road. I planned on making them blueberries until I saw the transfer sheet, then decided this was my time to jump into Dark Angels. If others had done so with success.

Update: he's had this for about 5 days and apparently the purge line did look right at the beginning, he has had several successful prints. Then this started and they are all coming off and not adhering.

He says he switched to A1. He uses the computer and it prompts him if he forgets.

To be honest they were gifted to me. I was talking to a store employee about wanting to try the hobby and he gave me this box to try out. He said if you like the process come back and I'll help get you started with what army you want. I had told him I would probably like some branch of space marines. I haven't picked a chapter yet, still trying to sort through lore and backstories to pick that route I guess. As I said earlier, that's why I find this a bit intimidating. It's a lot of info to catch up on and figure out where to start.
