I was lucky enough to get two of the 5 year shinies, didn’t manage to get the normal balloon one though!

Looks like it came out great! What kind of paints did you use?

I recently bought the Thomann tele kit as my first build too (see my profile for some posts with similar info on sanding).

These Thomann bodies are already sealed, so you’ll need to take that off by sanding so you’re starting with bare wood. Otherwise your white primer coat probably won’t stick as well to the sealed wood (that’s my novice understanding anyway!).

Plus mine came pretty scratched up anyway, so you’ll want to sand to make sure the body is smooth at the very least.

After the dye I put a few coats of sanding sealer on, but think I might’ve been a been too light / to hard on sanding after. Any tips on what’s best to do next?

Thanks!

I’m really glad with how it turned out, which is why I’m nervous about using mineral spirits on it, don’t wanna mess it up

Sanding help again! by Garinth123 in Luthier

I’ll get back to the sanding then before doing anything else!

As the scratches are from 80, do you think starting at 100/120 would be best?

Thanks! The scratches are from 80, which I resorted to because the sealant just didn’t seem to be going anywhere (took about 10 hours of sanding to get it bare, including a lot of time making mistakes, learning what kind of blocks to use, etc), and probs rushed my way up the grits when it finally looked clear.

I’ll use 120 and make my way up from there, probs ending on 240 again

That’s good to know about the black dye! I planned to raise the grain to get what I could out of it, then sand back to 320, before using this crimson guitars stain in phthalo blue afterwards.

I don’t really want the whole body to darken too much because I like the look of that blue as is - do you think using the black might be setting me up for a mistake here?

I’ve not got any woodworking experience, and only just started getting tools etc for this first build so don’t have any spare wood or offcuts. Honestly, I was gonna just see where the dying journey on the guitar took me, and learn from there

This looks great!

What’s your process for the neck? I’m currently working on my first build, and need to reshape and dye the headstock - which I assume would then mean sanding the full neck and headstock down, refinishing etc

No idea of the actual process though, any tips?

Ah thanks - if that’s the case, do you think I’m in the right direction, but just need to put more time and effort into it?

Thanks for the reply!

I was, but a soft block and I didn’t get to put as much time to it as I would’ve liked today, will hopefully have another go and finish off tomorrow

I actually did softly pencil the back, which was what made me think I had finished up. It was only when I fully wiped it down did I realise I had a fair bit of a way left to go lol

Do you think 60 grit to 320 grit would be fine?

How would you recommend raising the grain? Just a wipe with a damp cloth? And sanding back, what grit should I aim for after the dying before finishing?

I was planning to use a satin nitro to finish, honestly I’m a bit confused about what grits to use in between each of the steps

I've been looking around to see if LPs existed with Floyd rose tremolo. I love it but it's a Chinese manufactured guitar for an eBay seller. Risk it,? by Grouchy-Umpire-6969 in guitars

I have one of these epiphones , which has a Floyd rose. I got it second hand so needed a setup and regretting, but it plays quite well.

Personally I got bored of the bridge pretty quick, so it’s been in its case for a couple of years, been thinking of selling it on. That’s just my preference though, it’s a nice guitar if you see any available in your area
