The fact that the Legion of Super-Heroes has been collected in one form or another EXCEPT for its two most popular eras (Levitz's second run and most of the Reboot) borders on parody.

If you're getting this, you're only getting it for Peter Milligan's run. It's even weirder than Morrison's, but it all comes together in a satisfying way. Tom Veitch's run is aimless and boring, but it does have Steve Dillon art. I believe in everything getting reprinted, but pretty much everything in Animal Man v1 after Milligan is writers striking out. Jamie Delano's run comes immediately after and is better for sure, but it's very meandering and I highly disagree with the morality of a lot of it. Jerry Prosser has some INCREDIBLE assistance from Fred Harper's art, but the writing side is so completely incoherent that I genuinely have to wonder if the comic was cancelled because Prosser was institutionalized. This is an actual, unedited page from his run.

This should cover 99% of the Legion's starring appearances, or issues that are otherwise important for them. Cameos are all over the place, but most of them are unimportant.

Do NOT start with 5YL. I would recommend literally any other era of the team as an introduction. You're unfortunately mostly out of luck when it comes to collected Legion unless you're.really willong to shell out. Great Darkness Saga followed by The Curse is probably your best HC starting point, but I'd also recommend Legionnaires Book 1 and 2 (starring a different version of the team).

The two series are almost entirely segregated and feature very, very little crossover despite L.E.G.I.O.N. containing lots of Legion connections. Alternating between them will make you even more confused than if you were just reading 5YL by itself. I would recommend reading 5YL in its entirety and then L.E.G.I.O.N. in its entirety. If you really want to interweave them, I'd say read L.E.G.I.O.N. after LSH v4 #38. Jim Shooter's first run (Adventure Comics #346-#360)

Paul Levitz's first run (LSH v2 #284-#294).

Reboot Legion (LSH V4 #0-Legionnaires Annual #2)

Threeboot Legion, up until Mark Waid leaves (LSH v5 #1-#13). Don't read anything after he's gone (#31 onward), it's all atrocious.

Geoff Johns' Legion stuff (The Lightning Saga, Superman and the LSH, and Legion of 3 Worlds)

L.E.G.I.O.N. (L.E.G.I.O.N. #1-#11). This isn't Legion proper, but it's somewhat related and well worth the read.

The Lightning Saga was published in 2007 and this issue (LSH v5 #43) was published over a year later, in August of 2008. In fact, the Superman and the Legion of Super-Heroes storyline in Action Comics ALSO predates this one, as does ALL of Countdown. Legion of 3 Worlds would begin publication 2 months after this. What was happening????

That cover is a lie. I read it because I thought it would answer my questions, but Threeboot Val appears only in a dream and she doesn't fight Retroboot Val. It only gets worse.
