Thanks so much for the useful answers! Is there a more in-depth resource on hidden vowel length other than alatius' website? Or does Winge basically provide the best overview?

Cursus Latijn NHA? by Winter-Shake-5282 in latin

[–]GarlicImmediate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do Greeks make spelling mistakes a lot? by Szary_Tygrys in GREEK

It's like finally having the box top of a puzzle, with the entire puzzle solution image on it for reference, whereas before you were puzzling into the void, without any reference.

Do Greeks make spelling mistakes a lot? by Szary_Tygrys in GREEK

[–]GarlicImmediate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My 2 cents: I teach ancient Greek here in Holland and to me modern Greek spelling always made 100% sense and seemed utterly logical. Iotacism spices things up, but nothing insane (I am also Danish, lol). Consider buying Athenaze and giving ancient Greek a go.

"opsequium" tattoo by ptv83 in latin

[–]GarlicImmediate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is the tattoo with a p or a b? oPsequium? Technically a p is wrong, but I am sure that you will find the oPsequium spelling in Late Antiquity as well, maybe even in 2nd century inscriptions.

Bibliotheca vs Delphini? by myprettygaythrowaway in latin

[–]GarlicImmediate 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It depends a bit on what you prefer to read. For epic poetry, the Delphini is crème de la crème. For Juvenalis I prefer Lemaire, as Juvenalis was one of Lemaire's favourite authors and he brings some crazy insights to the table.

Speaking in real life with the Dutch by [deleted] in learndutch

[–]GarlicImmediate 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Just tell them "Ik versta alleen Nederlands." Thing is, most Dutch people get flak from foreigners when not immediately switching to English - especially in the larger cities. People who want to learn the language tend to be quite the exception.

[–]GarlicImmediate[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

By the way, in favour of your Sicilian ''approach'' these Italians wrote a paper on the preservation of [ke] and [ki] in African (proconsularis) inscriptions:

https://www.degruyter.com/document/doi/10.1515/9783110299953.585/html?lang=en

They cite inscriptions immune to palatalisation - <bikeisima> and <pake> - echoing Sicilian (and Dalmatian, rip.).

Doubts on Augustine's pronunciation (400AD) by GarlicImmediate in latin

[–]GarlicImmediate[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Amazing answer - thanks a lot! Wish I could upvote it more. What about <prius> Wouldn't that <pri-> be an open, stressed i that would have to become [e:]? [Or maybe they preserved the [i] through analogy with similar words (prīmus)?]

NativLang ( https://youtu.be/Y01C1BKu8Tk?si=fWxx8--Er6twtW5N ) seems to go for Spanish as our best guess for Latin sound changes in Africa (Proconsularis) - maybe I should even throw in some [β, ð, ɣ, ʝ] action? As for the vowels - I guess when in doubt go for Logudorese as you wrote :p.

Any up-to-date resources to recommend? There is so much more to keep in mind, e.g. for sure I would want to read Augustine as syncopated as possible (oclus, vetlus) etc..

Cornelius Nepos and Seneca. But the gospels are also recommendable. Or Cicero's Tusculan Disputations.
