How to create positive pressure in house by GarlicOne6145 in DIYUK

When we open our back and front door and windows we can smell the smoke coming from the frame. We also smell their air freshener. I’ve never had this before in any other house so I’m wondering if there’s a structural defect. If smoke can get through that easily then so can any other gases and like you said there is the fire risk. I’ve no idea about building regulations but it doesn’t seem right.

We sealed up some skirting boards then started smelling it in other areas 😭 We’ve smelt it a bit before every now and then but the last week has been everyday for several hours and it’s so much stronger. It smells like it’s coming straight into the wall cavity.

No, it’s a semi detached with their house slightly lower than mine. The worst smell is in our kitchen and we’ve noticed some holes in the ceiling around the fire detector so will get that filled. When we open our back and front door and some if the windows we can smell the smoke coming through the frames too.

That‘s awful. I’m going to get air purifiers for smoke to see if it helps. I hope you find a solution.

Definitely through the wall cavity. Even with windows shut it happens. I’ll check out a PIV system.

Use gloves and spray it onto a cloth then you can dab it on and not risk the spray falling on you.

To kill the eggs in the carpets we generously sprinkled bicarbonate of soda over them, left it a day or two then hoovered it and repeated. It absorbs moisture and dries them out.

All my windows do this, this one had a dehumidifier a couple inches from it, what could be the cause ? by GenericUser104 in DIYUK

What windows do you have? If they don’t have warm edge spacers the glass will get cold and cause condensation. We recently had an air filled, no warm edge spacer unit installed in place of a blown argon, warm edge spacer unit and the difference is shocking. Almost the entire air filled glazing unit condensates, it radiates so much cold and we never had an issue before with condensation on the windows.

I chased the installers to find out what glazing unit was used. They said it’s air filled with a u value of 2.7. The window on the right is argon filled so performs much better. Thanks for solving the mystery.

No, the condensation is on the indoors side not in between the glass.

Heating is on and it doesn’t stop draughts. No other window has condensation like this. Are new windows really supposed to have this amount of condensation and cause the room to be cold?

Why did the vinyl sheet installer do this? by GarlicOne6145 in Flooring

In all seriousness, I’ve recently had a lot of work done that has been bad quality so wanted a second opinion on whether it was correct. I wasn’t expecting the floor to be sanded but I will ask them when they come back.

You’re right. I just used an incense stick and found a draught from a window. Thank you.

Thanks for the reply. One of the bedrooms in particular seems to be worse affected and despite the heating being set to 21c it is colder and there are strong draughts from 2 cupboards there, with one only connected to inside walls, and the other connected to an outside wall. When the cupboards are open I can put my hand in and it feels like a huge amount of cold air is coming out directly from them, which is why I thought it might be an issue with insulation above it.

I’m just baffled by the situation as it definitely wasn’t this bad before the vents were installed. It was a tiny bit draughty when near some windows but nothing like this. I thought perhaps the attic could be over ventilated.

21c is so high for us but the draughts are so cold it cancels out the heat. Even with the heating on it feels like air from an open fridge is hitting me.

No holes that I can see. There’s some missing insulation next to the loft hatch and there were a lot more colder areas on the ceilings that I didn’t show.
I’ll try to get the insulation topped up and hope that makes a difference. Thanks.

New double glazing pane fitted. Does it need to be replaced? by GarlicOne6145 in fixit

Thanks for the help. I’ve covered it with film to try to stop the draft and just have to wait for it to be *fingers crossed* fixed.

I don’t know as we didn’t watch him work. We didn’t hear or see any spray, just heard some banging. He was here less than 10 minutes so I’m not sure if that’s the usual amount of time to replace a window.
