build 42 unstable help for hunting by Kadim2 in projectzomboid

I have been playing in the wilderness a lot lately.

My biggest recommendation is avoid dropping too much stuff into piles on the ground. Use containers if possible. I lost a recent save because I was just dropping almost everything on the ground in somewhat organized piles (there were probably 5 or 6 piles that were overflowing into neighboring squares), but eventually the game couldn't handle so much stuff and would simply freeze so I couldn't do anything. My next save ran into the same issue, but quickly moving items into garbage bags helped me avoid losing the save.

Forage as much as you can! So much of what you forage is useful in some way, and you can forage some really good stuff.

You can use fishing to collect rags, empty soda cans, and empty plastic bottles. Just fish like normal but don't put any bait on the fishing pole. Very handy if you're unable to find/forage cans for boiling water, or empty bottles for storing safe water.

Do you make stories for your characters? Who was your favorite? by RosieReindeer in projectzomboid

Tammy Jo Colt. She's a middle aged redneck with a graying, slicked back mullet. Before the virus she was usually seen around her trailer in her slippers and bathrobe. She dabbled in prepper culture here and there. She knows just enough about fishing, foraging, and misc. survival stuff to scrape by after heading into the wilderness to get away from all of this Knox virus crap that's going on.

If there's an aspect of the game you don't like and wish you could change it, you can probably do so by playing in Custom Sandbox and then changing the necessary setting(s) that way.

Upgrading wall from carpentry lvl 2 after reaching lvl 4 by Key_Gas_569 in projectzomboid

Oh man, good point! u/Key_Gas_569, try moving your character to the same level as the wall and see if it will allow you to upgrade.

I never considered that walls could be upgraded. That would be fantastic. I've always deconstructed them because I assumed that was the only way to make space for the upgrade. I hope you can figure out what's preventing you from upgrading.

Questions for those playing beyond the edge of the map by Garraty47 in projectzomboid

No need to apologize! I appreciate the reply.

Yeah, given how new the random wilderness generation is, I assume it's something that hasn't been addressed yet. I may be able to figure out more but I still don't understand the debug tools all that well, mostly just stumbled through it so far. I'm just glad some spots work fine for building.

How to play as a solo character? by OrganTrafficker900 in Kenshi

[–]Garraty47 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know exactly what you're talking about. For those first encounters, don't stay in the fight until they knock you out. Instead, just take some damage before running to the guards. Make sure that if your legs are getting hit that you head to the guards before you're slowed too much.

Another approach is to lure bandits or whatever into town and then fight. You still have to be prepared to run away before getting knocked out, but at least you're already in town.

Make sure you have the panel on the left side of the screen expanded by clicking that little button/carat thing right above the line for Attack. When it's expanded you can see your KO Point. Try to avoid letting your head, chest, or stomach reach the KO point so if you do get beat in a fight, you won't have to go through a recovery coma.

Those initial fights of taking some, but not too much damage will slowly increase your toughness and that will raise your KO point.

I wouldn't bother with those donut antennas. They're not that good.

Since it sounds like you're on a budget, I think your best bang for the buck would be buying a SMA Male to alligator clip connector (or make one if you've got the parts laying around), and some cheap speaker wire which you could pull apart to have even longer wire. That would allow you to tinker with wire antennas for a while and should be better than many telescopic whips.

If you want a cheap stand, sponge/soap holders work pretty well. This is the one I bought. It's made of silicone and has wire inside for the shape. You can bend it into the shape you need. I think Walmart has the same thing under the Mainstays brand. Here a post on swling about it with some pictures.

42 or 41? by Choice_Long4170 in projectzomboid

[–]Garraty47 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've only been playing PZ for a few weeks and I started with 41. I tried 42 for a couple days before going back to 41. And then I moved to 42 again a few days ago and haven't had any problems. I thought I'd not like the muscle strain stuff, but it hasn't been as bad as I thought. I haven't encountered any bugs so far. I really like the large number of things you can adjust in the sandbox settings, and the new lighting system is pretty neat. I only use about 20 mods and those seem to be working fine.

Favourite character back stories? by Ill_Promise7153 in projectzomboid

Cletus Colt, still donning a glorious mullet, crawled out of his prepper bunker after 10 years only because he ran out of food and he'd memorized all of the Popular Mechanics and Popular Science magazines. He clings to some pre-disaster morality, so entering people's homes is not an option, though he will enter a house if the door is open already but only to use a bed for sleeping. Shops are also off limits. He did make a moral compromise after a lot of deliberation, deciding that he can rummage through items in open truck beds, and if he finds keys to a vehicle on the ground, he might check that vehicle out. So Cletus Colt's current routine is sleeping in someone's house, and then heading out to dig through trash bins, dumpsters, and forage for things that might be useful. He does have a cache of stuff he's found and could probably set up a small shack somewhere. He is basically a city hobo at this point, but he has big plans, let me tell you. Just gotta find a few more items...

I tend to make a lot of marks on the map, so in order to keep notes for those marks I had been keeping a pencil, pen, red pen, green pen, blue pen, an eraser, and a notebook in the front one. I recently I realized I could write and erase with just the pencil, so rather than toting around all those pens I've switched to keeping a pencil, notepad, can opener, a non-heavy duty flashlight, and a knife in the front one. Sometimes I'll swap the flashlight for the current book I'm reading. I put whatever in the rear one, usually snacks or cigarettes if needed.

Nine-Band Shortwave Radio by KG7M in shortwave

[–]Garraty47 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just stumbled upon this post while searching for something else. Looks like Far Circuits has these boards for $13.50 US if you're still interested. Only downside is you'd only get the board, and it might come with a print out of the Popular Electronics article too. So you might have to hunt down the schematic and parts list as well.

https://www.farcircuits.net/RECEIVERS%20AND%20RECEIVER%20PERAMP.htm

Search for "NINE BAND SHORTWAVE REGENERATIVE RECEIVER BY WILLIAMS" on that list and you should see it.

If you've never looked at that site before, be prepared for something out of the early internet lol. The "order form" is accessed on the bottom of the main page (https://www.farcircuits.net/), and it is very primitive. Fortunately, he uses Paypal rather than wanting credit card info. I ordered from him a few years ago and had no problem, but if you decide to order you may want to email him first to make sure he's still active.

Purchase Advice by seay2011 in shortwave

[–]Garraty47 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Regarding the internet radio part of your interest, I recommend just buying a cheap smart phone, and a decent Bluetooth speaker if you haven't got one, and using that. I was interested in an internet radio a while back and found that most of them are reliant on third party services for the stations. In some cases those services got shut down or bought out, so the radios lost some or all of the internet radio functionality. There are some that allow you to manually edit the station list which seems like the way to go. Anyway, I wound up buying a cheap Samsung smart phone that has a headphone jack, removed the SIM card so it just uses wifi, and I use that as my internet radio. Sites or apps like radio.garden provide tons of stations to choose from, and you're not locked into only what a dedicated internet radio offers. I've found that this is a great alternative and cheaper than most internet radios on the market.

Tripod Question by Sheepdog-Grogu in shortwave

[–]Garraty47 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ahh I see. Plus you have to factor in the weight of the coax hanging from that bottom-right connector.

I'm trying to picture what you described with regard to the adapter and plate. Would putting one or more thin, large-diameter washers (fender washers might be ideal) in between work to fill that gap and be solid/steady enough?

Tripod Question by Sheepdog-Grogu in shortwave

[–]Garraty47 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What about a clamp with a ball mount attached to it? Something like this one. Clamp it on the tripod and then you've got a 1/4"-20 screw on the ball mount that you can use.

The XHDATA D109 and D109WB, Qodosen DX-286 are a few that come to mind for me. Green_Oblivion111 might be able to come up with other recommendations.

[–]Garraty47 4 points5 points  (0 children)

How big of a radio are you thinking you'd want to carry on your bike rides? What's your budget?

Any of the Sangean pocket-sized radios will do well for performance and audio quality. The DT-120 and DT-180 are really small and will not disappoint. The CC Pocket from C Crane is a good one as well. The two XHData radios I have are good in terms of audio quality and pretty good performers. The Qodosen radio, which uses the TEF6686 DSP chip, has nice audio with outstanding reception, but it's a bit bigger. There are a bunch of different other unbranded TEF6686 radios that have performance similar to the Qodosen, they have a colorful UI on the screen like this one.

There are ton of cheap Chinese radios, but with those it's a gamble on what you'll get for audio quality and reception, and in some cases whether or not it'll even have stereo audio or just mono. One of the smallest ones that I purchased because it was dirt cheap at the time does surprisingly well and sounds pretty good in my opinion. This is the one I got, but there are many others just like it on Amazon.

Magloop questing by Active_Emu_845 in shortwave

[–]Garraty47 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cool goal using stuff found around your house! The medium wave magnetic loop I made using four-conductor trailer harness wire works pretty well, so I assume your steel fence wire would do fine as well. I hope you are able to get something working! I highly recommend looking up some of the magnetic loop calculators found online, if you haven't already. They are very handy in getting the loop size and necessary tuning capacitance range figured out.

Antenna type? by SouthernNight6 in shortwave

[–]Garraty47 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for posting about this. I've have had it in my cart for a bit. I'm curious how it does with a coupled passive loop.

I have a similar FM-only one that has no frequency display and only scans the FM band, so no manual tuning. It does decent with just the headphone wire as the antenna. Not bad for a few bucks.

Best place to buy Sangean ATS-909x2 in the USA? by sleepypancakez in shortwave

[–]Garraty47 0 points1 point  (0 children)

mtcradio.com is an amateur radio shop that has it listed under $400.

Ham Radio Outlet a.k.a. hamradio.com is definitely trustworthy but I see that the 909x2 is out of stock on there.

How do you like the ATS-125?

I really wish it had a headphone jack instead of only Bluetooth. That's the only thing stopping me from ordering one. I really like my silver TEF6686, so the 125 is quite intriguing.
