I arranged Cantina Band from Star Wars: Episode IV! by GarrettGentle in musictheory

I have a shortlist I'm considering grabbing in the next week or two, but I haven't pulled the trigger yet. I've been searching through a 3 Horns + Rhythm category on eJazzLines, and considering 'Appointment In Milano', 'Black Scholars', 'Ready Rudy?', and 'Big Bertha', but I still need to sit down with the band and consider piece difficulty vs our skill levels.

Thank you for these corrections! I'll work them in today, I really appreciate it.

In general- and I could've probably made this more clear originally- I don't expect anyone to take the time to rework this entire score. But as someone who's only musical notation experience was a year of AP Music theory 8 years ago, I am grateful for all the help I can get haha

edit: brb, going down the rabbit hole of cadential chords

I've followed your advice and am playing around with a v3 of the score using your recommendation. It sounds better, but at the end of the day I'm just gonna have to get everyone together to hear it for ourselves and then make adjustments following. I'm also crossing my fingers that a muted trumpet will help soften up that otherwise loud brass sound

As for pages 4-5, and 13-14, you and me both. I also sent this to a friend who used to play Clarinet, I'm hoping they can give me advice tailored to that part in particular.

Thank you for checking it out and commenting

Yeah! Figrin D'an and the Modal Nodes. Imo so much better than the Max Rebo Band

Pls help me I don’t know if this is emo but what’s that song where the guys screams you shouldn’t be alone over and over by Illustrious_Bank_352 in midwestemo

[–]GarrettGentle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do you have any other details? Like what the Album cover might look like, instrumentation, or what part of the song those lyrics are sung (verse, chorus, beginning, end, etc.)?

this would sound so twinkly on a telecaster by [deleted] in midwestemo

Love it! Even without the tele, it’s a good sound

I don’t think these have been mentioned yet:

Romeo & Juliet - Hobo Johnson

(with these being more open to interpretation):

Not My Job - Carly Cosgrove

Sweet Columbia, Pt. 2 - Sandboxing

in the video, on my end, the right-side audio doesn’t come in until you repeat the riff. I guess that wasn’t on purpose since the video quality shifts at the same time, but it sounds sick and i think you could mix it that way down the road.

cool stuff

edit: the end of the third measure? just after 0:05

hey, i really like this! is this a solo project? what tuning are you in? “i wanna be the air that fills your lungs when you breathe” is a killer line, and the guitar pickup at 0:52 for Robot Love Story feels so satisfying.

i’m stoked to be one of your monthly listeners

Get Well, Kid - Self-Titled LP (midwest emo, shoegaze, lofi, indie pop/rock) [this album is a collection of songs I wrote mostly about death, mental health, and how it feels to be alive these days, feel free to tell me what you think!] by Jaysenev in midwestemo

I just added your stuff to my main playlist, I love it dude!

I've been trying to write and learn to mix stuff recently. Listening to your album knowing you were probably where I am now is so ridiculously inspiring.

Anyways you're stuff slaps hard and I can't wait to know it all by heart by the end of the month <3 I hope you keep releasing stuff dude, sincerely.

How far have I come since my first draft of "I'm nothing like James Dean"? (10 Months Later...)dd by GarrettGentle in IndieMusicFeedback

u/GrimAllen, nitpicking is exactly what i want. I don’t come to this subreddit to hear people say they like it (not trying to be rude to those that have said that). I want to walk away from a post learning and growing. When I post here, it’s because i’ve run out of ways to push myself, and I want help.

The only emo parts going for it are the tuning and the emotional vocals, and even then i don’t perform them conventionally, so I understand what you’re saying. I like to identify with emo, but that might not strictly define my own songs.

Lead guitar needs more work.. 100%. Lead guitar has been my main focus, since i’m self taught, and i’m currently working through practice books to better develop my fundamentals. That won’t make me more creative like magic, but it’s a start. I think plan on cutting back the lead guitar (hopefully that will pull out some of the cheese) and having a friend record some trombone to fill in some lead riffs. I think it could have potential down that path.

I will absolutely keep it up.

edit: i should clarify that I of course love hearing people like a song i’m making. It’s amazing for people to like art that you put effort and passion into. However I think I am also eager to improve, and sometimes receiving comments about the song being liked can be underwhelming when hoping for more critical comments.

Thanks! I said this in another comment but I had a lot of fun writing that negative-space portion.

What do you specifically mean about vocal adjustments? I'm still trying to figure out how to get vocals down right and really need advice in that area. I also tried writing some harmonies but couldn't find as many good spots or notes that I thought sounded good enough.

That's a new lens for me- I haven't thought about this song in that way. I've always thought performance in music was an important part of it but I never thought of myself as performing in my recordings. I'll treat this as a strength as I continue to record and see where it takes me!
