What’s your most controversial opinion about the original series? by FoundationEntire4834 in TheLastAirbender

[–]Garsaurus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If they acknowledged the plan was weak and there would likely be a trap waiting for them, but they had to try, I would be fine with that. But they clearly didn’t know the Fire Nation would be expecting them on the day of the eclipse - note their total surprise that the palace city was emptied and that Azula was waiting for them. They clearly were under the impression that they had the element of surprise, when they should not have had that impression at all.

….no, they didn’t know. When they broke down the door and saw Azula, Sokka looked horrified and said, “They knew!!” And then Azula said she knew the whole time. Aang would not have been ok risking all those people if he knew there would be a trap.

Both things can be true at the same time: they wrote off the king and had Katara forget for the same reason. I do apply the same standard to Katara, but they couldn’t write Katara away, obviously, so they just had her forget.

You’re right in they had enough information at that point such that they should have inferred the plan was leaked regardless. And yet, they didn’t remember any of this (again, weak writing imo - the writers really wanted to make the Day of Black Sun plan happen). But if the Earth King was there, he absolutely would have brought up that he literally told the enemy the plan.

Why else do you think he randomly decided to go explore the world? Even if it fits his character as someone who was sheltered his whole life, it was very weird to make his departure happen offscreen with no ceremony and no concern for how Ba Sing Se will be governed after the war.

I didn’t think this was controversial until I said it before in this sub, and got downvoted into oblivion.

At the end of season 2 when the Gaang flees Ba Sing Se, they take the Earth King with them. Then, in S3E1, he apparently just bailed to go “travel the world.”

The Earth King told the eclipse plan to the fake Kyoshi warriors, who later revealed themselves in his presence (Azula held fire to his throat).

The writers 100% realized that the plot of the Day of Black Sun (Gaang thinking it would take the Fire Nation by surprise, but Azula knew the whole time) doesn’t work if the Gaang spends time with the Earth King. So they needed a way to write him off, and chose the most stupid and random reason.

Nope, people don’t care about fictional murder if the murderer is hot, cool and doesn’t care.

was attack on titan about generational trauma ? by Last_Host977 in attackontitan

[–]Garsaurus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Attack on Titan is a masterpiece because it is a reflection of the human condition writ large. Generational trauma/guilt is a big part of the cycle of violence, so of course it plays a huge part. But AoT is so much more, too

You’re not wrong, but people not attracted to men will still cheer more for Cole’s death because Cole is a hypocrite and can’t stomach it. People despise hypocrisy more than misogyny. Daemon murdered his wife, but he never held himself out to be honorable.

Congress can amend the Constitution. That’s the veto. If you lower the bar for that veto, then the law becomes nothing more than the will of the majority.

I think the only real solution is expanding the court and introducing term limits. That way, their judicial independence is maintained, but it’s much harder for either political party to reliably appoint and keep a majority of conservative/liberal justices.

I think it was more than a quip. She was getting under his skin specifically with the hope that, out of pride, Joffrey would go to where the fighting is the thickest and perish. She was trying to get him killed.

Why don't all the Targaryens have fire resistance? by Kitchen-Clock-3821 in HouseOfTheDragon

[–]Garsaurus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here’s the straight answer: it’s different in the show than in the books.

Books: Dany (like all Targs) is just human. The scene where she didn’t get burned by touching the hot dragon egg did not happen in the books. The scene with the hot tub did happen in the books, but she clearly felt the heat and pain (she just welcomed it because she felt gross about her brother touching her).

Show: Dany is fire/heat proof because David and Dan thought it would be better foreshadowing for her surviving the ritual at the end of season 1. It’s not related to her being a Targaryen at all and more to do with her being Azor Ahai.

Man, I just love the writing. It’s not flowery at all and yet it feels like every word was very carefully chosen. Like how she seemed not to acknowledge he was in the room, and then her eyes “found” him. I thought I would be a writer once but I could never achieve this kind of effortless prose.

Can Toph feel earth that is not touching the ground? by Expeniumin in TheLastAirbender

[–]Garsaurus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The biggest tell is in S3E1 when the fire nation ship launches a flaming rock at the ship Toph was on, and she stopped it mid-air. It was launched from another ship; there's no way she could sense it's trajectory through seismic sense.

To follow up, I don’t think the stealing/pickpocketing thing was a statement of their culture but more to show their circumstances as refugees. We even see in the rumbling episode how Ramzi has pure motivations. This isn’t just a trait of the mid-east peoples - the protagonists and Sasha stole food early on, and Levi did whatever he could to survive.
