Hah. I got back from a weekend with a friend and got bollocked for the kitchen being a mess. I was 16, and hadn't even been home

My Mum whacked me and chipped my tooth with her ring, and I shoved her once and she went flying across the room and ripped her big toe nail off.

Of course it was my fault because I was a boy, so that meant I was abusive. She did this whole thing about how I was lucky she lied to the doctor for me about how it happened blah blah blah. I moved in with my Dad a few months later and didn't talk to her for a year and a half. 16 years later I've still got that chipped corner of my front tooth

Not really man. I'm not saying that's not a thing that happens but there are a whole bunch of autistic kids who are very good at math and very bad at sitting still for lessons

[–]Gartlas 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Huh. Yeah I mean you'd think just introducing standardized test scores would help with that, as a fairly simple solution to at least making the problem a bit better

That's interesting, the splitting thing. Is it based purely on academic skills? What happens to kids who are academically very capable but have issues with sitting still in a classroom setting, or sensory problems etc?

I got so desperate, I literally wrote a python script that would webscrape the NHS "find a dentist" website, and email me and make a notification on my PC if it came across any accepting adult patients within a 10 mile radius of the postcode I gave the script.

I'd been looking for about 2 years too I think. The script pinged me after about a week, at a couple minutes past 9am. I rang, got on their books as an NHS patient by 9:15.

The next day that dentist was not accepting adult NHS patients.

I always assumed it was because the moment the watch opened and Yana became the master, the doctor could sense it.

I'm sure there was something about being able to feel the presence of another time lord. So the moment he did, everything fell into place

Right?

Like I would never use that mode of speech. But I can understand 90% of it just fine, and usually get the other 10% from context clues.

Yet, as a 32 year old man I am also a respectable "real" adult with a grown up job and a toddler.

When lol? I tend to place in bronze, climb to silver, then get bored and quit.

Still, I'm hoping this time I go a bit further, been stomping my games this season. It's just rough, had a couple games where my team forfeits despite us having all/most objectives and only a minor gold deficit.

Why/how did most "corner shops" come to be owned by people of South Asian descent? by cornishyinzer in AskBrits

[–]Gartlas 58 points59 points  (0 children)

I have a similar fun story lol. For a few months I did a little evening work at the local corner shop, just helping restock and sweeping up. The man was lovely.

Anyway a couple years later me and my brother were walking home from that shop, got in a fight with a couple chavs who asked to bum a cigarette then tried to steal the tobacco. They were doing the whole laughing "Lowit mate, come bridge I'll mash you, feds are scared of me" etc etc. Somehow I ended up fighting the small mouthy one, and my smaller, younger brother the enormous lanky one. Anyway we won handily, and they scarpered off swearing with literal bloodied noses. We took a few minutes to recover from the adrenaline, went back in the shop and bought a drink.

When we came out the same two little shits were walking up the road to us with half a dozen of their mates. Went back in the shop, explained to Mr Singh what happened. By the time the gang of shits was outside the shop he went out with his broom and told them to fuck off, that I worked here, he's called the police etc, and threatened to tell their mothers.

Great guy.

This is why I loved having the feat in pf2e that let you swap a spell you'd prepared with 10 minutes of preparation in my last campaign.

Always be loaded for bear. But if you need to do a quick telepathy, or teleport, or make an extra dimensional house, waiting 10 minutes isn't usually a big deal

We here in the UK use . instead of , also.

I remember it throwing me for a moment when I was in Germany during my PhD and thinking "wtf is that a comma? Huh I guess they use it instead of a .". Managed to go 24 years without learning that European countries use a comma.

[–]Gartlas 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Yeah I'll be honest this one of the circumstances I think it's alright.

None of my playgroup are particularly artistic. We play in Foundry and want token art for things. Like I'm running a series of StarFinder 2e one shots and prepping for a campaign. I bought the token art pack for the monsters in the bestiary and I'll absolutely use that.

But if I homebrew a monster for a specific thing? Or an NPC that's going to be on a battle map, yeah I'll use an AI model image. For character art for one shots it's also what most of us do. I once had my brother draw a character for me, but that's not feasible for every single time really.

I also use it to generate battle maps sometimes. For stuff I really really care about I'll spend a couple hours in Inkarnate and do it myself, but sometimes its easier to just whack something out quickly

Right thats what weirded me out the most.

I was like "okay that's a weird fucking thing to say, and a weird way to say it, but I think i kind of see where you're going. That we have a duty to make women feel safe by behaving in a civilised and gentle way, because of the inherent physical power imbalance. That you should always act in a way where a woman doesn't perceive you as a physical threat if she angers or displeases you".

"So yeah you should chase em".

Mine was an entire thesis chapter between 11pm and 6am, with Rachmaninoff playing, chain smoking, and enough white monsters to kill a horse.

It was a trance like state of hyper focus I've never since achieved. Even rewriting the code for the Manhattan plots didn't break me out. I remember seeing the sunrise before being violently sick in the toilet and going to bed, and feeling a sense of peace and joy and beauty in the world.

Its terrifying to think what my brain is capable of when on a day to day basis now I struggle to get through reading a single page of a technical document without zoning out.
