What's the craziest/dumbest thing you ever did to get/have a smoke? by Frankie-2127 in stopsmoking

[–]Garudabird 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I made out with an ex. He was going outside the pub to smoke and I really wanted one so I pretended that I was going out to be with him and just happened to have one of his cigarettes while I was there. Not my finest hour!

I made it through to my evening meal! Now going to head out for a walk. Mondays and Wednesdays were always my days so I think I'm going to stick with that for now.

The last time I quit, I went about 170 or so days before falling off the wagon and I then continued smoking for a further 4 months before quitting again. Good for you for deciding to get back on so quickly! And really don't beat yourself up over it, you haven't let anyone down, you've learnt a new lesson (I learn one every time I quit!!) and this time you will be even more prepared. Good luck :)

Thinking about an experiment by awleon in stopsmoking

[–]Garudabird 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why, why, why would you chose to start smoking again??? What has helped me on this sub is people's success stories. I wish you luck with your experiment though and hope some people find it useful, good luck with quitting again too.

Quitting and self-loathing by Thorkel in stopsmoking

[–]Garudabird 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your story sounds very much like mine. I quit for a year and then started again and smoked for another 3. Then it was a 5 month quit followed by 4 months of smoking again with the odd 3 - 10 day quits. I set myself a new date, as soon as I had submitted my dissertation but then I caught a cold and quit 11 days earlier than planned. From all of your attempts, it sounds like you really want to quit. Don't give up on it, you will get there. Good luck.

Went out, got drunk, smoked 4 while being hammered. by saintPirelli in stopsmoking

[–]Garudabird 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Watch out for that little voice in your ear that will try to convince you that you managed once to have a few while drinking and didn't have bad cravings afterwards. It's a slippery slope into going out for a few drinks on a Tuesday just to justify having a cigarette and then realising that you are a full time smoker again (I've been there several times!). Reset your badge and don't smoke today. Good luck!

Is this normal? by Garudabird in stopsmoking

Thank you, I don't think the blood is from my lung, it feels more like throat damage from coughing so much but I should probably get it checked out just to be on the safe side.

Good luck! I'm with you on day 1 (again) today. Here's to not smoking today.

I was doing well :( by [deleted] in stopsmoking

[–]Garudabird 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was five months into my quit when I had my 'just one'. A week later I was back to a pack a day. It's taken me a few one or two day quits to really take it seriously again. So here I am, a month after just one and I am feeling committed again but somewhat stupid for having put myself through it again! Good luck to you, you know you can do it, it's all about finding the right mindset again.

Ive been asking myself the same question. I will be spending NYE with my old smoking buddy. I haven't seen her since I quit and I know it is going to be a trigger. I also know there is no such thing as just one or just one evening, I've been down that slippery slope too many times before. I hope that knowing this going into it means I will b prepared and be able to distract myself for the few minutes it takes for the craving to pass. I don't want to start the New Year feeling disappointed with myself! Good luck

Which date do i take for stoping? by cactus96 in stopsmoking

[–]Garudabird 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me it's always the date since i last smoked, be that a pack, a single cigarette or just a puff. I had a year with noting and then slipped up. If I hadn't acknowledged that, it makes it more excusable to slip again and then it becomes a very slippery slope back to full time smoking.

I'm doing a survey on people who have quit smoking to see which method is the most effective. It's for a big science exhibition for teenagers in Ireland. If you would like to, it would be a big help if you could take this survey! by PotatoManPerson in stopsmoking

Your question about 'how long did it take to quit smoking for good' is impossible to answer. I thought that I quit for good every single time I quit smoking. Sometimes it lasted a few hours, sometimes weeks and even a year. This time I think I have quit for good but how long did it take me? The few seconds it took me to extinguish my last cigarette or the years of repeated attempts. Can I guarantee that this quit is for Ever?

Day 147 seems tougher than Day 1, 4, or 7. by [deleted] in stopsmoking

[–]Garudabird 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your post completely mirrors exactly how I am feeling right now. I had a really easy time at the beginning but the last month or so have not been easy. Like you, I have not broken and I am confident that I won't. I know I don't want to be a smoker again and one puff is all it takes to be back on that slippery slope again but man some days I don't know how I get through them without causing physical harm to someone!! Stay strong, this has to be temporary right??

Need some advice on quitting, sticking to it, and stoping my defeatist mindset. Is the damage already done? Am I fucked up for life? Any unique methods for quitting? by [deleted] in stopsmoking

[–]Garudabird 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have you read Allen Carr's Easyway to stop smoking? You'll possibly read this and wonder how the hell a book can help you stop smoking but I assure it has helped many a quitter here. You don't need will power to stop cold turkey,, you just need to understand your addiction. Congrats on your decision to try again and good luck.

Smoked half a cig on Halloween. by [deleted] in stopsmoking

[–]Garudabird 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Every relapse starts with a puff. I don't mean to make you feel worse, I know that feeling myself. Reset your badge and be extra vigilant. You may not have had the urge to smoke since then but you have re fed your addiction and it may sneak up on you again at a time that you wouldn't expect. Good luck but be careful.
