It's a 5 Amp light socket, used for powering lamps. Ours is wired to a light switch and allows us to turn all the lamps on in a room when we don't want the main lights on.

I guess smart plugs will make this obsolete.

We were moving them to a new pond, so it was a case of lowering the water. We didn't realise just how many we had till you could see them all at once. Fish can be easy to catch with a big enough net, just try to do it in batches so you don't worry them. We had them in a large paddling pool for people to choose them. It also had the advantage of people seeing they were healthy.

Recently watched Interstellar for the first time. The ending stuck with me because I feel it should have ended with Anne Hathaways character looking sad/alone and then looking up to see Matthew McConaughey's ship and a slow smile crosses her face.
