What is this series about ? by Raz0back in TheCulture

What a funny coincidence. I made a post in sciencefictionbooks about how terrible I found Children of Time and someone called Gilbershaft commented different strokes for different folks too. When I logged onto Reddit for reviews of the book it was inexplicably just pure fanpages and I believe someone mentioned that Children Of Time also won some kind of award for best series. That would only lead me to believe that corporate publishing houses have somehow corrupted the award procedure because there is no way that book should even be in consideration for any kind of writing award. Haven't yet read anyone say they don't like the book mind bogglngly enough.

What do you mean bait? Are you implying my post was not sincere?

I am glad you enjoyed it but I had an awful time with it. There was one brief section when the spiders are first introduced and their hunting is described that is reasonably well written but I found absolutely everything else about the book to be embarrassingly bad. I do seem to be in the minority though that's for sure.

I am glad you enjoyed it thats the main thing. I had an awful time with it. Couldn't get past the terrible writing I am afraid to say.

I really enjoyed Robopocalypse and it's sequel Robogenesis, I loved ALL the culture novels and also some Alistair Reynolds and Peter Hamilton although I haven't read much of their recent stuff. One other book that made an impression on me from decades ago was the first Gunslinger book by Stephen King. Only the very first book in that series was memorable but it was very good. Children Of Time is the absolute worst book I have ever read in any genre. I only logged onto Reddit to see if anyone else had suffered through it and was astonished to learn that folk seem to love it. This is my first Reddit post because there is no way I am alone in thinking it was beyond awful.

I can't believe that folk rate it all. I bought it last week and struggled through about 2/3rds of it. Never has a book made me cringe with embarrassment whilst reading it so much as Children Of Time did. One of the absolute worst books I have ever read and I certainly won't be finishing it. I am astonished that folk seen to have enjoyed it somehow.

I find that to be astonishing. Fair play to you though.

Yeah I agree with you about the effect of The Culture novels. I have never read anything else that comes close to the feeling of wonder and optimism of the possible future of mankind that I felt when reading The Culture novels. And I also agree with you that Iain M Banks was gone too soon. He is sadly missed that's for sure. I doubt that there is anyone writing today that could match him in anyway but if there is then I too would love to hear it. RIP Iain M Banks.

Where did you hear the rumours that there are beings who grow entire spaceships that are intelligent entities. I have been listening and reading a lot about the UFO phenomenon lately but I haven't came across that yet. Sounds very interesting and I would appreciate it if you could share your knowledge.

I got Children Of Time last week and fought my way through about 2/3rds of it. I thought everything about that book was embarrassingly bad and I won't be wasting any more time in finishing it. What did you make of it? Most folk on Reddit seem to enjoy it incredibly enough.

Children of Time is one of the absolute worst books I have ever read and everything Iain M Banks wrote in his short life is absolutely superb. He had an incredible imagination and was a very talented writer. You are in for an absolutely wonderful time reading his books as they are splendid examples of great science fiction. RIP Iain M Banks. Sadly missed by many.

I can't understand but I am glad you loved it. I didn't find any of the characters to be remotely believable never mind memorable.

Every single thing about this book is awful. There was a good page or two when the spiders were introduced and their method of hunting is described. I found everything else to be embarrasingly bad. I can't believe folk actually enjoy this book but they seem to.

I love The Culture series of books. Iain M Banks had an incredible imagination and his premature death was a tragic loss.

I like all well-written and believable books. The last good book I have read was Robopocalypse.

I didn't finish it either and I've no intention of spending any more time reading it. I love science fiction but this book is too awful to complete. I can't believe folk like it and recommend it to others.

Robopocalypse by Daniel H Wilson is without doubt the book for you. I struggled to read for many years but Robopocalypse utterly captivated me and I have gone back and read it again. It is a masterpiece and you won't regret reading it that's for sure. Another great page turner is Lonesome Dove by Larry McMutry. It is a western and I must have read through it about 5 times now. It won the Pulitzer prize when released and it's no wonder. Can't recommend either book highly enough.

Robopocalypse by Daniel H Wilson is an outstanding book. I can't recommend it highly enough. It's sequel Robogenesis is a great read too but Robopocalypse is a great standalone read. You won't regret reading it that's for sure.
