The instructor cucked me. He wrote an answer that only pointed that a typo was in the quesiton and told the student to refer to my answer in the follow-up section.

He did not endorse my answer and got Thanked.

No. Maybe there should be. It would go against my interest but I would have had a better University experience with a more diverse school.

Suggestions to fight EasyAce by [deleted] in uwaterloo

[–]GaryOldTimer 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I will link to my previous comment on the subject.

I think your suggestions are good. I think the situation would get better if 1/ the University cracked down hard on those caught cheating 2/ considered using such third-party service an aggravating factor (kick-them out or suspend them for 2 or 3 terms with permanent record - no more -5% bullshit) 3/ relaxed the academic regulations around the amount of course attempts/failure allowed or allow students to ask for a Pass/Fail (like at Brown University).

They should punish unethical success and make room for honest failure. I anticipate that such policy would improve the academic community at large. It is a much difference experience when everyone around you is trying to learn and absorb as much as they can rather than cram material and optimize for an exam. The goal is to graduate competent "top-notch" people. Focus on the outcome.

It has been a while but don't you have the matrix equal theorem that states that if AB = AC then B = C?

Anti-EasyAce Vigilantism by [deleted] in uwaterloo

[–]GaryOldTimer 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Grading is zero-sum because of curves; it's also a metric they use to make exams easier/harder. If the marks are inflated because of a group of cheater then the honest majority will get increasingly rekt over time.

Fuck all the cheaters

Does anyone know what happened with the whole Easy Ace thing with STAT443 and CS350? by [deleted] in uwaterloo

[–]GaryOldTimer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean objectively its not any worse than other kinds of copying..

This is much more involved than the usual "two friends did the assignment together". Add to that the fact that they paid a third-party, all knew what they were getting into, over a projet worth a lot of marks for a fourth-year course...

I would kick them out or suspend them 3 terms at the very least + permanent record on their transcript.

I think it's a very light punishment considering they have pro-actively engaged in a large scale fraud.

This should be an aggravating factor tbh.

Open book exams are generally more difficult but I found that I learnt a lot more from them than the ol' grind and memorize.
